Are Your Kids Stressed? Get Expert Advice from Christopher McCarthy, and Drs. Kerry & Francis Van Voorhis on the WCNC Morning Show, Charlotte Today

Charlotte, NC (Vocus) October 19, 2010

Charlotte Today with Colleen Odegaard hosted a panel of experts to discuss childhood stress and anxiety. On the panel was Christopher McCarthy of Informed Therapy Resources (ITR) and co-author of Turnaround: Turning Fear Into Freedom, a comprehensive audio program for the treatment of child anxiety and stress. Mr. McCarthy discussed four top stressors that children face: 1) Academic performance- maintaining good grades, keeping up with homework and projects, and the pressure to please their parents. 2) Transitions- When children move, switch schools, move up a grade, or experience transitions from parental separation, divorce, or death. 3) Peer relationships- making and maintaining friendships, feeling rejected, and the drama of social cliques and the popularity quest. 4) Overcommitment- The amount of time in after-school activities has skyrocketed over the past decade. The time today’s children spend at sibling’s activities has increased 6 times over the past two decades. Time management is now a necessity for many children leading to further stress. Mr. McCarthy advised parents to evaluate their children’s activities and to make sure they are being their child’s advocate rather than an additional source of stress.

Dr. Kerry Van Voorhis is the Medical Director for Levine Children’s Hospital. He covered the tell-tale symptoms related to childhood stress including headaches, shoulder and neck pain, upset stomach, irritability, loss of concentration, and struggles with sleep. Concerned parents should take their child to their pediatrician or counselor if they notice symptoms persisting longer than expected, i.e. midterm exams or a deadline for a major project.

Dr. Francis Van Voorhis is a homework expert for John Hopkins. She stated that the nationally recognized standard for homework, supported by research and the national PTA, was that children should have about 10 minutes of homework per grade level, per day. For example, if a child is in the third grade, he or she should have no more than 30 minutes of homework per day, with possibly 15-20 minutes of reading at bedtime. Parents need to work with their child’s teacher to make sure the amount of work is appropriate for their child. To see the full segment in its entirety, follow this link- http://www.wcnc.com/charlotte-today/Help-kids-manage-stress-104710124.html

Christopher McCarthy and his partner Dr. David Russ have developed a professional audio program designed for anxious children who struggle with anxiety and stress disorders such as Separation Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Social Phobia, Panic Attacks, and other childhood fears. Turnaround: Turning Fear Into Freedom is a major innovation in the treatment of child anxiety. No other treatment solution available today combines the professional, creative, and child friendly designed features found in Turnaround. Visit myanxiouschild.com for further information.

Turnaround is based upon cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which has shown conclusive results in the treatment of children with anxiety and depression. The program invites the listening child to join six other anxious children on an imagined 10 day hiking trip with two ?Docs? Chris and David, and a mentor teen named Emily. Emily acts as the narrator and guide, while the “Docs” lead the children though each day?s adventurous lesson. Along the journey, the children meet imaginary characters that make learning the anxiety reducing techniques easy and fun. The talents of 14 child actors and 6 adult actors were utilized to make Turnaround an audio adventure they’ll want to listen to again and again. That’s the beauty of Turnaround; the kids are learning scientifically researched anxiety busting techniques in way that feels fun, friendly, and emotionally engaging.

The Turnaround Audio Program includes:

???? Turnaround Program for kids (10 CDs)

???? Turnaround Journal, a 74 page workbook for kids

???? Chill Kit, relaxation guide for kids (1 CD)

???? Parent Guide, packed full of helpful information and techniques to help parents (2 CDs)

A bonus CD titled Med FAQs in also included. Med FAQs is an interview with nationally recognized Neuropsychiatrist, Dr. James Lee, offering a comprehensive discussion on the medications used to treat child anxiety is also included.

Bel Marra Health Comments on a Recent Study by Moffitt Cancer Center that Investigates the Long-term Effects of Conventional Breast Cancer Therapies

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) May 04, 2012

Bel Marra Health, well known for offering high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional supplements, has commented on a recent study by Moffitt Cancer Center that investigates the long-term effects of conventional breast cancer therapies.

Researchers at the Moffitt Cancer Center worked with colleagues at the University of South Florida and University of Kentucky in a study that involved 313 women with early stage breast cancer who were being treated with either chemotherapy or radiation.

In order to assess the patients cognitive function the researchers tested their ability to solve problems (executive function), their verbal abilities and how quickly they were able to complete tasks under pressure (processing speed). The patients were tested six months after treatment and then retested 36 months after completing treatment. To assure accurate results, the researchers also tested a control group of women who did not have breast cancer.

Lead author of the study Paul Jacobsen, Ph.D. says, “we found that chemotherapy-treated patients performed worse than non-cancer controls in processing speed, executive functioning and verbal ability. These domains may be the domains most affected by chemotherapy,”

The researchers conducted the same test on women who underwent radiotherapy, and found that the women experienced the same reduction in cognitive abilities as the chemotherapy group.

In addition, the researchers found that the women in the control group experienced an improvement in cognitive function over time, while the women in the chemotherapy and radiotherapy group did not. According to Jacobsen, “Since patients report cognitive problems that interfere with their daily activities, early workups should include tests to determine cognitive functioning prior to treatment.?

This is not the first study to link chemotherapy to long-term cognitive impairment; there are multiple others. CEO and Spokesperson for Bel Marra Health, Jim Chiang commented on the findings saying, ?with so much evidence pointing to serious cognitive after-effects of conventional breast cancer therapy, perhaps it is time to develop strategies to help prevent it.?

LegalView Reports on Rare Traumatic Brain Injury Condition That Could Cause Complete Paralysis of A Victim

Denver, CO (PRWEB) October 30, 2008

LegalView, the number one legal resource available on the Internet, informed its brain injury information blog readers of a severely debilitating condition that has been linked to brain injuries. The condition, known as locked-in syndrome, also called Cerebromedullospinal Disconnection, is considered a rare disease that occurs when the pontine vessels hemorrhage or die, which may caused by a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Unfortunately, there are no known cures for the condition, which causes every muscle in the body to become paralyzed accept for eye movement. Individuals who have suffered from a brain injury should seek medical treatment immediately to avoid the development of such a condition. It is also advisable to locate an experienced traumatic brain injury law firm who can locate a number of brain injury lawyers that can assist in developing potential litigation, which may retrieve monetary compensation for a TBI victim.

There are three classifications of locked-in syndrome, including classic, incomplete, and total. Victims of the condition become quadriplegic and are unable to move their lower face, chew, swallow, speak, breath, move body parts/limbs or move eyes laterally, according to news articles. However, patients are cognitively aware of their surroundings, follow normal sleep cycles and can hear and see. Suffering from a traumatic brain injury disorder can be extremely difficult because of the brain injury symptoms. It is imperative that individuals seek medical attention and possible legal consultation for their injuries. Discussing a potential brain injury lawsuit with a qualified personal injury attorney may offer relief to a brain injured victim and their friends and family.

In addition to a full library of resources for traumatic brain injury patients, LegalView also hosts a number of information portals for victims of other conditions and medical ailments such as the latest scares involving type 2 diabetes medications including Avandia and Byetta, or the most recent treatments being studied for mesothelioma patients.

Both Avandia and Byetta are anti-diabetic prescription drugs that have recently been the subject of investigations by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for serious side effects caused by the drugs. Avandia, from GlaxoSmithKline, has been linked to a list of side effects with the most critical dangers including early on-set osteoporosis and heart failure/disease among Avandia patients. Byetta, also known as exenatide, is manufactured by Amilyn Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly and has been causing pancreatic conditions among patients who use the drug, which is given via an injectable pen. According to reports received by the FDA, patients began to be hospitalized for the development of acute pancreatitis only two years after Byetta’s approval. Neither Avandia nor Byetta have been recalled, but patients who currently take either drug are encouraged to speak with their medical professional about switching medications. Additionally, it may be important to locate an Avandia lawyer or an experienced Byetta attorney who can support victims of the drug’s side effects with the development of a pharmaceutical-based lawsuit. For more information on the drugs, visit the LegalView informational site at http://www.LegalView.com/.

LegalView also continues to update its mesothelioma information portal regularly to provide victims of the damaging cancer with resources for the latest treatments, clinical trials as well as the most recent mesothelioma jury verdicts and how to locate a knowledgeable mesothelioma law firm. Mesothelioma is a rare but deadly form of cancer that is caused through the inhalation of asbestos fibers and dust. Once inhaled, the asbestos fibers begin to form cancerous cells on the lining of the lungs, however, because the condition remains dormant for nearly 20 to 30 years, treating the cancer becomes a difficult feat. It is important for victims of the disease or those who think they may have been exposed to asbestos to consult a medical professional immediately. The sooner the condition is diagnosed, the better the survival rate becomes for a mesothelioma victim.

Tanning Beds: A Look at the Science. Release By Bill Couzens, Founder Less Cancer

Middleburg, VA (PRWEB) February 25, 2011

With Spring Break approaching, The Less Cancer Campaign wishes to remind sun worshippers of some of the dangers of tanning.

The Skin Cancer Foundation tells us that a tan, whether you get it on the beach, in a bed, or through incidental exposure, is bad news any way you acquire it. Tans are caused by harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning lamps, and if you?ve had one, you?ve sustained skin cell damage. No matter what you may hear at tanning salons, the cumulative damage caused by UV radiation can lead to premature skin aging (wrinkles, lax skin, brown spots, and more), as well as skin cancer.

Tanning machines emit dangerous ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and frequent tanners using new high-pressure sunlamps may receive as much as 12 times the annual ultraviolet radiation they would receive from regular sun exposure.

UV radiation is a proven human carcinogen and is linked with a higher risk of all forms of skin cancer including potentially deadly melanoma, which is the most common form of cancer among young adults 25-29 years old. On average, indoor tanners are 74 percent more likely to develop melanomas than non-tanners. They are also 2.5 times more likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma and 1.5 times more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma, the two most common skin cancers.

Who are the scientists?

Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, Md. Ph.D., a Less Cancer Board Member, was the founding director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) and the UPMC Cancer Center.

In 1968, Dr. Herberman was a senior investigator in the immunology branch of the National Cancer Institute where he organized a research program related to tumor and cellular immunology. In 1971 he became head of a newly established cellular and tumor immunology section in the laboratory of Cell Biology of the National Cancer Institute. During this period he had responsibility over a research program made up of several investigators who were researching cell mediated immune response to tumors in animal model systems and patients with cancer. As a result of this research, a new category of lymphocytes was discovered and termed natural killer (NK) cells. Since then, much of Dr. Herberman’s research has been focused on the characterization of these natural effector cells and on their role in resistance to cancer growth.

Currently Dr. Herberman is Chief Medical Officer for Intrexon Corp., which specializes in innovative approaches to immunotherapy for the treatment and prevention of cancer. Dr. Herberman is responsible for overall leadership of Intrexon?s expanding anti-cancer clinical programs and related regulatory affairs.

What the Scientists Say.

Dr. Herberman is particularly concerned that the incidence of melanoma is rising rapidly and that “burns from UV lights are central contributors to increased risk of melanoma.? He goes on to say that although ?low level exposure to UV light either from sun or tanning beds will help maintain levels of Vitamin D, one can readily eat vitamin D-containing foods or nutritional supplements without running the risk of over-exposure to UV. The particular danger is to avoid exposure that will lead to an actual burn because that has been shown to put people at risk many years later for malignant melanomas.”

Recently, a regulation geared toward teens in Victoria, B.C. and its surrounding municipalities prohibits the use of tanning beds in the region.

KORT Physical Therapists Use Results of New Study to Treat Chronic Hip Pain

Lexington, Kentucky (PRWEB) February 10, 2012

KORT Physical Therapists use results of new study to treat chronic hip pain. It?s that aching feeling in your hip that makes you wince when you stand up, walk down stairs or get out of bed. It doesn?t have to be just another sign of getting older; you can do something to alleviate your chronic pain with the help of physical therapy.

According to KORT physical therapist Stephen Karam, inflammation caused by osteoarthritis in the joint wears down and damages the cartilage which surrounds the hip joint and acts as a cushion as the hip bone moves in the socket; without this cushion, the bones rub together resulting in pain, stiffness and a reduced range of motion in the hip.

?Osteoarthritis is painful and debilitating. The wear and tear on joints and joint muscles contributes to the condition. The hip is one of the more common joints affected by osteoarthritis, which is why current research is focusing on this specific area of the body,? said Karam.

A recent study by Gabriela, Reichenbach, Zhang, and Felson published in Arthritis Rheumatology discovered that hip muscle weakness can hasten the onset of hip osteoarthritis and worsen the disease progression after the initial onset, said Karam. The study concluded that including hip muscle strengthening to a rehabilitation program is beneficial, both before and after the onset of osteoarthritis.

?Strengthening the muscles around the hip joint and creating more flexibility greatly reduces pain,? said Karam. ?We have a series of hands-on manual techniques and exercises that target strengthening the hip muscles for patients suffering hip pain. This combined with a low-impact exercise such as walking or swimming and light resistance training can great reduce pain and improve joint mobility.?

Some individuals with chronic hip pain end up requiring a total hip replacement, said Karam.

The total hip replacement procedure is a common surgical intervention where the diseased hip joint is replaced with an artificial joint that prevents that painful ?bone on bone? surface contact.

?As with any surgical procedure, physical therapy is a great adjunct to the course of care in order to relieve pain, restore range of motion and function to the hip so that one can return to pain free living activities,? said Karam. ?The same combination of manual physical therapy, low-impact exercises and resistance training can also help in the recovery process.?

A study in Journal of Orthopedic Sports Physical Therapy conducted by Trudelle-Jackson demonstrated that a brief postoperative course of physical therapy in the early phase of healing was not sufficient for the patients they studied. They concluded that outpatient physical therapy service was found to be most beneficial for both return to weight bearing and postural stability, said Karam.

?Unfortunately, a large number of patients who have undergone a total hip replacement do not receive outpatient physical therapy post operatively which impacts their ability to regain their level of function,? said Karam. ?It?s our goal to help patients return to the same level of activity that had before their injury or surgery. We want them to continue to do the things they enjoy and live the life they want.?
