American Psychiatric Nurses Association Celebrates National Nurses Week and Mental Health Month with Free Continuing Nursing Education on Mindfulness

Arlington, VA (PRWEB) May 04, 2012

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) is proud to celebrate the diverse contributions of nurses during National Nurses Week and to raise awareness of the importance of mental health care during Mental Health Month. In particular, APNA is proud to recognize psychiatric-mental health nurses for their dedication to promoting mental health and recovery, fighting stigma, and improving the lives of those with mental illness and substance use disorders. Psychiatric mental-health nurses play an essential role in the delivery of health care that facilitates overall wellness. In honor of both of these events, the podcast ?Mindfulness and Reflection: A Resource for PMH Practice? will be available for free in the APNA eLearning Center, May 7th ? 14th, to both APNA members and nonmembers.

This online continuing nursing education program emphasizes the benefits of self-care for nurses, promoting personal wellness through the integration of mindfulness and reflection into nursing practice. In this 30-minute session, for which nurses can earn up to .5 contact hours, psychiatric-mental health nurse and clinical nursing professor Barbara Jones Warren, PhD, APRN, BC offers practical tips and techniques to help nurses maintain their personal mental health and wellness. Nurses can access this session for free through May 14th in the APNA eLearning Center at: http://elearning.apna.org/session.php?id=7981. APNA members will have access to this session at no cost throughout Mental Health Month until June 1st.

?It is important for all nurses to remember to care for themselves – too often we focus on the people we serve and forget about our own wellness,? says APNA President Marlene Nadler-Moodie, MSN, APRN, PMHCNS-BC. ?Using mindfulness and reflection on a daily basis promotes mental health and can only enhance a nurse?s ability to deliver quality and effective care.?

Every year, National Nurses Week focuses attention on the diverse ways America’s 3.1 million registered nurses (RNs) work to save lives and to improve the health of millions of individuals. Mental Health Month is celebrated each May to raise awareness of mental health conditions and promote mental wellness.

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association is a national professional membership organization committed to the specialty practice of psychiatric-mental health nursing and wellness promotion, prevention of mental health problems and the care and treatment of persons with psychiatric disorders. APNA?s membership is inclusive of all psychiatric mental health registered nurses including associate degree, baccalaureate, advanced practice (comprised of clinical nurse specialists and psychiatric nurse practitioners), and nurse scientists and academicians (PhD). APNA serves as a resource for psychiatric mental health nurses to engage in networking, education, and the dissemination of research.

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center?s Commission on Accreditation.

New Video about Unawareness of Mental Illness Released to Mark Mental Health Awareness Month

Arlington, VA (PRWEB) May 04, 2012

A new four-minute video featuring dramatic footage from an interview with a mentally ill man who killed two U.S. Capitol police officers while trying to protect the nation from cannibals has been released by the Treatment Advocacy Center to mark the annual observance of Mental Health Awareness Month.

?Unawareness of one?s own mental illness ? clinically known as ?anosognosia? ? is the leading reason that people with brain diseases such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder don?t take the medications that could stabilize them,? said Doris A. Fuller, executive director of the Treatment Advocacy Center.

?Until policy makers and the public recognize that affected individuals are medically unable to seek care voluntarily, these people will continue to suffer, and society will continue to pay for the homelessness, arrests, incarcerations, hospitalizations, victimization and violent acts that result from non-treatment?

E. Fuller Torrey, M.D., executive director of the Stanley Medical Research Institute and narrator of the video entitled ?Anosognosia,? reports that approximately 50% of those with schizophrenia and 40% of those with bipolar experience anosognosia, a syndrome that is widely acknowledged in connection with other medical conditions.

?We recognize it for Alzheimers disease, but we seem to have trouble recognizing that this is common for people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder,? Torrey explains in the video.

The video provides a rare glimpse of what active anosognosia looks like. In it, ?Capitol Hill shooter? [Russell Weston details his cannibalism and other delusional thinking but insists he is not mentally ill. Weston was never tried for the 1998 killings and remains hospitalized for paranoid schizophrenia.

The Treatment Advocacy Center is the only national nonprofit focused exclusively on eliminating legal and other barriers to treatment for people with the most severe mental illnesses. Among those barriers are laws and policies that pose obstacles to court-ordered treatment as a means of stabilizing individuals too ill to seek treatment before tragedies occur.

The event also featured the first public screening of ?Girls in STEM,? a short video about girls who participated in the 2012 White House Science Fair.

Women and girls continue to be significantly underrepresented in the STEM fields ? a trend that starts early and comes at a serious cost to both the career prospects of our young women and the success of our economy. By ensuring women and girls receive the exposure, encouragement and support they need to enter and succeed in STEM fields, this country can benefit from the full range and diversity of its talent.

The reach of these organizations within the entertainment industry workforce from writers, producers, directors, to 3D engineers, and visual effects model makers, and technologists including entertainment from film, television, music videos and game industries creates an opportunity for aspiring girls and women to discover future employment opportunities within the evolving technologically advanced aspects of the entertainment industry of the future. The collaboration will work together to host creative briefings for entertainment industry networks, studios and production companies that accentuate the role of women and technology, engineering and science.

“Together, through our shared vision for change, we will work to mobilize a broad swath of the entertainment workforce to inspire girls and women to pursue technical careers within and beyond the entertainment industry. In the coming months and years, we will work together to host creative briefings for entertainment industry networks, studios, and production companies to inform them about the role of women and technology, engineering, and science,” said Brian Dyak, President and CEO of EIC. “This work is made possible in part by Boeing?s renewed commitment to support EIC?s Ready on the S.E.T. and?Action! initiative and we looks forward to engaging other private partners to develop an innovative, creative, and diverse STEM workforce,” he continued.

Training for Alzheimer?s Disease or Other Dementias: Home Instead Senior Care Network?s Groundbreaking Training Program Focuses on Coping with Difficult Behaviors

Omaha, NE (PRWEB) May 09, 2012

This caregiver ? whose spouse has Alzheimer?s disease ? describes the frustration and confusion that grips families whose seniors are dealing with the symptoms of Alzheimer?s disease and other dementias.

The characteristics of these diseases are varied and change with time, but often leave families and their caregivers frightened and ill-equipped while they try to provide at-home care for their seniors.

A new groundbreaking training program now offers help for the many families who are dealing with challenging behaviors including refusal, delusions (or false beliefs), aggression, false accusations, wandering and agitation.

The Alzheimer?s Disease or Other Dementias CARE: Changing Aging Through Research and Education(SM) Training Program takes away some of the dread associated with these diseases. The no-cost program, which is available to families through their local Home Instead Senior Care? office, provides an innovative approach that helps families make the most of a senior?s life journey. The unique approach includes the history, passions and hobbies of the person with Alzheimer?s disease to help manage challenging behaviors associated with dementias.

?CARE is a wonderful hands-on approach that helps caregivers deal with the behavioral changes that too often accompany these disorders ? one of the biggest stressors for caregivers,? said Dr. Jane F. Potter, chief of the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. ?There was previously no good program available using adult education techniques to provide hands-on practice in learning how best to help people who suffer from dementia. This is huge.?

Resources of the Alzheimer?s Disease or Other Dementias CARE Training Program can help family caregivers understand Alzheimer?s disease and the changes they can expect to see in their loved ones. With the increased knowledge of Alzheimer?s and how to deal with it, family caregivers will be better able to cope with the stress of their responsibilities.

Local Home Instead Senior Care offices can provide even more information about making the most of living with Alzheimer?s and other dementias, giving caregivers hope for a brighter future. Too often, a family caregiver can become overwhelmed ? physically and mentally ? with providing in-home care and can see a slide in his or her health.

This CARE Family Caregiver Training Program is the same curriculum that is being offered to professional Home Instead CAREGiversSM. While providing respite services to families, Home Instead CAREGivers are trained to maintain a safe environment, encourage engagement, provide nutritious meals, offer supervision of medications, make trips to pharmacies for prescription refills, create social interaction, deliver mind-stimulating activities, provide transportation for medical appointments and supervise and assist with activities of daily living.

The CARE Family Caregiver Training Program is being offered by local Home Instead Senior Care offices throughout the country or through a self-guided online e-learning course.

In addition, CAREGivers are trained in the network?s groundbreaking Alzheimer?s Disease or Other Dementias CARE: Changing Aging Through Research and Education(SM) Program to work with seniors who suffer from these conditions. Press Council of India Passes Order Against False & Malicious Reporting by Deccan Herald, The Times of India, The Daily News & Analysis, The New Indian Express & Mid-Day

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) May 09, 2012

Hon?ble Justice Katju?s strong admonition came at the sitting of the Press Council in Chennai, India on 27th February this year, where representatives of Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam had filed complaints against the English newspapers Deccan Herald, The Times of India, The New Indian Express, The Mid-Day and Daily News & Analysis (DNA) for their false, malicious and defamatory reports about Paramahamsa Nithyananda and the organization during 2010-2011 as per the court documents [File No. 14/527/10-11-PCI]

The hearing was personally presided over by the National Press Council Chairman Hon?ble Justice Markandey Katju. Admired in legal circles for his pathbreaking judgments, Hon?ble Justice Katju is a former Supreme Court judge, a prolific author and a strong upholder of the authentic Vedic tradition.

Upholding the complaint by Nithyananda?s representatives as justified, Hon?ble Justice Katju went so far as to ask the erring newspapers how any of them would like it if their own names were seen in reports carrying such serious charges, without their having been even consulted first! Without further ado, Hon?ble Justice Katju passed all 5 orders in favor of the complainants. Counsel for the complainants, Ms. Daisy, also placed the request that the same order hold good for any future deviations from the law by the same or other members of the press, according to the court documents.

Written orders for the same were received on 2nd May 2012.

An extract from the written order:

Journalistic ethics require that the newspapers obtain the version of the affected party and post publication afford right to reply to the affected. These complaints regarding publication of defamatory charges against Swami Nithyananda have been countered on the ground of being based on the chargesheets. That being so, the respondents, in view the reports base on the nature of tarnishing the reputation of the accused, ought to have confronted and sought his views. If after seeking his counter-version the newspapers proposed to proceed with the publication, his version should also be published simultaneously. In the present case, the allegations are extremely serious and the version of the Swami or his representative should have been taken into account and published in the newspapers.

About Nithyananda:

Paramahamsa Nithyananda is a global leader in yoga, meditation, kundalini awakening & enlightenment science. He was recently coronated as the successor and the 293rd pontiff of the world’s most ancient Hindu organization, Madurai Aadheenam. Birmingham Maple Clinic Reports Teen Depression Gets a New Diagnosis

Troy, MI (PRWEB) May 09, 2012

Mental health experts in Michigan are excited about recent research from Northwestern University, which has developed the first blood test to diagnose depression in teens. According to Lori Edelson, Birmingham Maple Clinic therapist and spokesperson, the latest developments in diagnosing teen depression are an important step in treating the mental illness in young people. ?Having the ability to diagnose teens who are suffering from major depression early on gives young people a better outlook for their future mental health, as those who don?t receive treatment often run into significant mental health issues down the road.?

Northwestern’s findings are a positive step in the search for more effective treatment for depression in teens, a group that is typically harder to diagnose due to normal mood changes and what is viewed as ?typical? teen behavior. Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and lead investigator of the study Eva Redei, PhD said, ?Right now depression is treated with a blunt instrument. It?s like treating Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes exactly the same way. We need to do better for these kids.?

Speaking to the social view of depression in today?s society, Redei said, ?Everybody, including parents, are wary of treatment, and there remains a social stigma around depression, which in the peer-pressured world of teenagers, is even more devastating.? Redei and her research team hope that by removing the stigma that is associated with depression, teens can be properly diagnosed and treated instead of allowing the illness to continue on into adulthood.

Birmingham Maple Clinic has been specializing in mental health services in Michigan for over 30 years, providing services for individuals, couples, families, groups and the community. The clinic provides treatment for a variety of psychological conditions, including child and adult ADHD, anxiety and panic disorders, chronic illness, depression, grief and loss, eating disorders, substance abuse, sexual addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder and marriage, family and relationship counseling. New Name for OCD Chicago: Beyond OCD

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) May 10, 2012

OCD Chicago, the leading provider of consumer-friendly resources designed to help people cope with and ultimately conquer Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), today announced its new name: Beyond OCD.

The Chicago-based nonprofit is making the name change in response to its increasingly global reach and to better reflect its mission of helping children and adults get proper treatment, according to Board of Directors President Jeanne Ettelson.

?If OCD touches your life, we are there to help,? says Ettelson. ?The name Beyond OCD captures the hope, encouragement and education we offer to OCD sufferers and their families. Facing this disorder can be an enormous challenge, but with the appropriate treatment most people can get past their OCD to lead the full lives that they deserve.?

In recent years, Beyond OCD?s work to increase awareness about the disorder in the general public and among health care professionals has reached well beyond Chicago and the Midwest. Visitors to Beyond OCD?s web sites come from over 100 countries.

?Our two web sites, free series of educational guides and one-on-one phone assistance give people across the country and around the world the current, practical information they need to improve their lives,? says Ellen Sawyer, executive director. ?While our service area is no longer limited geographically, we will continue to provide referrals to local treatment professionals and support groups and to sponsor awareness events in and around Chicago.?

OCD: The Facts

OCD is a neurobiological anxiety disorder that causes people to endure unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and ritualistic behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) that they are driven to perform over and over. As the average age of diagnosis goes down, OCD is increasing viewed as a disorder that first strikes in childhood. While most people who have this disorder know their obsessions and compulsions are irrational and excessive, they cannot control them.

OCD is characterized by obsessions and compulsions that take up an excessive amount of time and cause significant distress.

????OCD strikes 2.3 percent of the U.S. population?that?s one in 40 adults and one in 100 children, or more than six million people. (1)
????OCD ranks among the top 20 leading causes of disability worldwide. (2)
????OCD extracts an economic impact estimated at more than $ 8.4 billion per year. (3)

While there is no cure for OCD, appropriate treatment can provide most OCD sufferers with significant relief from their symptoms and help them get ?Beyond OCD.? Experts believe that a combination of exposure and response prevention?a form of cognitive behavior therapy?sometimes accompanied by medication leads to the best results for most people.

Founded in 1994, Beyond OCD?s mission is to increase public and professional awareness about OCD, educate and support people with OCD and their families, and encourage research into new treatments and a cure. It is a volunteer-based, nonprofit organization. For more information, visit http://www.BeyondOCD.org and http://www.OCDeducationstation.org.

Fibromyalgia Awareness Day is May 12: Allsup and Pain Connection Work to Make Fibromyalgia Visible

Belleville, IL (PRWEB) May 08, 2012

Fibromyalgia is a common cause of work-related disability, and the chronic pain that characterizes the disorder can take an emotional and psychological toll. May 12 is Fibromyalgia Awareness Day, and Allsup, a nationwide provider of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) representation and Medicare plan selection services, is offering a Fibromyalgia Day Awareness poster download to help make fibromyalgia visible.

?We work with individuals with fibromyalgia every day,? said Mike Stein, Allsup?s assistant vice president of claims. ?We appreciate the challenges they face in getting an accurate diagnosis and communicating how fibromyalgia affects their daily lives. You can?t see pain, so it?s challenging for individuals who have a healthy appearance to convey how profound their symptoms can be.?

Gwenn Herman understands those challenges well. Following a motor vehicle accident that resulted in chronic pain, the licensed clinical social worker and diplomate in clinical social work started a support group in 1999 that formed the genesis of the national nonprofit organization, Pain Connection.

?We are constantly judged because we look normal,? said Herman, Pain Connection?s founder and executive director. ?No one really understands unless they have it. Fibromyalgia Awareness Day really calls attention to it, and hopefully, with more education and awareness, people will start looking for resources, and then they find us [Pain Connection].?

Pain Connection?s mission is to help people with chronic pain improve their quality of life and take a more active role in their health.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), working adults with fibromyalgia average almost 17 days of missed work per year compared to six days for persons without fibromyalgia. Working age women with fibromyalgia hospitalized for occupational musculoskeletal disorders were almost 10 times less likely to return to work and four times less likely to retain work one year after hospitalization. For many, return to full-time work is impossible due to the severity of symptoms such as:

????widespread pain,
????problems sleeping,
????fatigue,
????morning stiffness,
????tingling or numbness in hands and feet,
????headaches, including migraines,
????irritable bowel syndrome,
????problems with thinking and memory (sometimes called “fibro fog”),
????depression and psychological distress.

?Whether it is fibromyalgia or another condition that causes chronic pain, we all go through the same process,? Herman said. ?There is grief, loss, changes to your family, career, your whole life. We try to help people ?normalize? and live in the present. That is one of the hardest things to do.?

Filing for SSDI is often an important step toward that goal, as benefits include regular monthly income (based on the FICA taxes the individual paid into the system) and Medicare eligibility. Health insurance is essential for individuals who have pre-existing conditions and lose their employer-sponsored coverage when they can no longer work.

For more information on Pain Connection?s programs, services and support groups, log on to http://www.painconnection.org.

For a free SSDI evaluation, go to Fibro.Allsup.com. You can download the Fibromyalgia Awareness Day poster at AllsupCares.com.
