New Health Benefits of Super Food ?Spice? Cinnamon Uncovered

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) June 21, 2012

The healing powers of the natural spice Cinnamon has been well documented in recent years. However, recent medical research as well as new information posted at Health and Wellness portal BeWellBuzz.com, have uncovered several new key medical benefits of one of the world?s most versatile and sweet tasting natural herbs including new ways of reducing blood sugar levels for people who suffer with Type 2 Diabetes.

Cinnamon is classified as an herb which is found underneath the bark of a Cinnamomum tree commonly grown in South East Asia and Sri Lanka. There are two types of cinnamon commonly used in Western Culture marketplace known as Ceylon and Cassia. Recent research conducted by the American Diabetes Association uncovered information which has shown how effective cinnamon can be towards reducing blood sugar levels for Diabetic patients.

In a recent study conducted by Dr. Alam Khan at the American Diabetes Association, a group of sixty people were tested to see how the introduction of cinnamon could potentially decrease glucose levels in the blood. The results of the study showed that a total of 40 out of 60 people tested, (66 percent) showed a decrease in glucose and LDL and HDL Cholesterol when consuming up to 6 grams of cinnamon on a daily basis.

The results of this study confirmed that intake of 1, 3, or 6 grams of cinnamon per day reduces serum glucose, triglyceride, LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol in people with type 2 Diabetes and suggest that when people who suffer with type 2 Diabetes include cinnamon in their daily diet this could reduce risk factors often associated with diabetes and even cardiovascular diseases.

Cinnamon is a versatile herb and is used for many health treatments and ailments beyond Diabetes. According to Dr. David Jockers from the Exodus Health Center in Kennesaw, GA, cinnamon is one of the most powerful antioxidants available naturally. It has the second highest content of antioxidant property among all spices. It contains ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), which oxidizes and neutralizes the Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) into harmless compounds that can be easily metabolized.

According to the study by Peter Ward from University of Michigan, Cinnamon can significantly reduce inflammation often associated with pain, redness, swelling and heat. Cinnamon contains cinnamaldehyde that is used to arrest the release of inflammatory agents from the cell membrane. Cinnamon can also be used as a great way to treat digestive problems such as gas and bloating based on author Laura Dolson, the writer of ?Low Carb Diets? guide.

These recent medical discoveries have concluded that cinnamon may in fact be one of the newest super foods which use natural ingredients to help reduce several of the common ailments common in Western Culture today. Studies Associate Alzheimer to The Declining Sex Hormones With Oxidative Stress and Inflammation as The Key Players

Miami, Florida (PRWEB) June 22, 2012

A newly published study that conducted a study of male sex hormones and an inflammatory, immune mechanism (TNF-Alpha) found that men with Alzheimer Disease (AD) had lower levels of free sex hormones (testosterone) than non-AD men and, further, states a positive association between the parent hormone to testosterone (LH) and inflammation.

Agreeing with this study, Nutri-Med Logic Corp adds that while the sex hormones (testosterone or estrogen) are well known for their roles in reproduction, but a large body of evidence suggest these hormones to also confer neuro-protective function in the cases of elderly AD, in part by anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory mechanisms and that the rise in their parent hormone LH (Leutinizing) is suggested to be an attempt in normalizing their declining levels due to the biological aging; women being more disposed due to the abrupt decline in their estrogen levels after menopause. (1, 2)

While inflammation is a known risk factor for AD, but studies also support the position that increased levels of oxidative stress have been found in AD patients and same to be strongly associated with amyloid deposits. Amyloids (Beta) are molecules that are implicated in the development and the progression of AD.

Moreover, while both testosterone and estrogen confer anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties on the neurons but the inherent protection against inflammation and oxidative stress is through the body?s internal anti-oxidant defense and its ability to efficiently resolve inflammation.

The cellular anti-oxidant defense is the ability of cells to counter oxidative stress (redox) and, according to The Department of Internal Medicine of University of Miami, the cellular redox is regulated by three systems, two of which are also regulated by an internal anti-oxidant called glutathione. (3)

Like the sex hormones, glutathione levels decrease by age and, thus naturally, such decline places a greater burden on any available molecule to counter oxidative stress, including but not limited to the declining sex hormones.

Overwhelming number of studies have shown that glutathione level increases through dietary supplementation of a nutrient called R-Alpha Lipoic Acid, a potent anti-oxidant by itself.

The natural resolution of inflammation in the nervous system is achieved through Resolvins Series D, a by-product of DHA Omega-3 fatty acids.

DHA Omega-3 fatty acids also produce Neuro-Protectin D-1, molecules that confer natural protection on the cells of nervous system (neurons).

While hormone replacement therapy is always an available option to increase estrogen and testosterone but a diet that would incorporate anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant nutrients is always essential and prudent.

In conclusion, Nutri-Med Logic Corp. agreeing with new study, adds that while the decline in male sex hormones and inflammation are implicated in the development and progression of Alzheimer in men, but oxidative stress is also a key player, women always carrying a higher risk due to the abrupt estrogen decline at menopause.

New Lawsuit alleges Avandia Caused Heart Attack

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) June 22, 2012

The media spotlight is often a double-edged sword. No one knows this better than Barbara Potuznik and her husband Joseph. And yet, the real story here is being overlooked according to Sean Burke of AttorneyOne.

According to court documents, on April 26th, 2012, an Illinois couple, Barbara and Joseph Potuznik, filed a lawsuit in Pennsylvania Eastern District Court (case no. 2:2012cv02252) alleging that Barbara suffered a heart attack caused by Avandia. Avandia is a popular drug, used to treat type 2 diabetes, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and approved by the FDA in 1999. The plaintiffs claim that Barbara Potuznik suffered a heart attack and congestive heart after she was prescribed the diabetes drug Avandia. Although the FDA did not announce an Avandia Recall in 2011, the agency informed healthcare providers and patients that they must enroll in a special program in order to prescribe and receive these drugs.

The lawsuit was filed in the Avandia multi-district litigation (07-01871). More than 2,500 cases are consolidated before Judge Cynthia M. Rufe in Avandia Litigation and plaintiffs claim to have suffered heart attacks attributed to their Avandia use.

AttorneyOne.com, a recognized authority on law, can provide helpful advice and simple solutions including how to get in contact with legal counsel so that, in case of severe complications from Avandia, someone can easily and inexpensively deal with it. As Mr. Burke, director of Media Relations for AttorneyOne.com, added, ?What all this information really illustrates is that potential threat from Avandia remains. For that reason, our focus should squarely fall on getting the word out and assisting people in finding the right legal assistance.?

In May 2007, the New England Journal of Medicine published an independent review of the 2005 clinical data revealing an increase of 43% in the risk of heart attacks and an increase of over 60% in the risk of cardiovascular death associated with the use of Avandia. In September 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it will significantly restrict the use of the diabetes drug Avandia (rosiglitazone) to patients with Type 2 diabetes who cannot control their diabetes on other medications.

AttorneyOne.com has further information on Avandia lawsuits including how to get in contact with legal counsel.

National Actos Attorneys File Lawsuit on Behalf of Louisiana Woman who Developed Bladder Cancer Allegedly Due to The Diabetes Drug Actos

(PRWEB) June 23, 2012

Parker Waichman LLP, a national law firm dedicated to protecting the rights of victims injured by defective drugs, has filed a lawsuit on behalf of a woman who suffers from bladder cancer, allegedly due to Actos. The suit names Takeda Pharmaceuticals America, Inc., Takeda Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc., Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc., Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited and Eli Lilly and Co. as Defendants. The complaint was filed on June 14th in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana (Case No. 6:12-cv-1701) and is currently pending in the Actos multidistrict litigation. Proceedings are centralized before Judge Rebecca F. Doherty, and Jerrold S. Parker, founding partner of Parker Waichman, has been appointed to the Plaintiff?s Steering Committee. [http://www.lawd.uscourts.gov/MDL2299; http://www.lawd.uscourts.gov/MDL2299/html/news.html

According to the complaint, the Plaintiff took Actos from 2004 and 2007; she developed bladder cancer around April 2006. The lawsuit alleges that Actos caused the bladder cancer, claiming that the Defendants were aware of this risk but did not inform the public. As a result of their negligent and/or fraudulent actions, the lawsuit is alleging severe mental and physical pain and suffering, past and future permanent injuries and emotional distress, economic loss due to medical expenses and living related expenses as a result of a new lifestyle. The suit also claims loss of consortium on behalf of the Plaintiff?s husband.

Actos is a medication approved to treat type 2 diabetes, a condition where the body fails to produce an adequate amount of insulin or does not utilize insulin efficiently. As a result, the body is unable to break down glucose for energy. Actos is intended to treat this problem by increasing the body?s sensitivity to insulin.

Actos was originally launched by Takeda and Eli Lilly. According to the lawsuit, Takeda announced the end of this joint venture in April 2006.

Actos was suspended in France and Germany last June, after a study funded by the French Medicines Agency found that using Actos for one year was linked to an increased risk of bladder cancer in men. Days later, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the Warnings and Precautions section of the label for Actos and other pioglitazone-containing medications would be changed to address a potential increased risk of bladder cancer. According to the agency?s Safety Announcement, use of Actos for one year was linked to an increased risk of 40 percent. This past April, Health Canada made similar changes to the Actos label. [http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm259150.htm; http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/dhp-mps/medeff/advisories-avis/public/_2012/actos_3_pc-cp-eng.php

Recent studies continue to support the link between the diabetes drug and bladder cancer. Late last month, Canadian researchers found that use of Actos for two years was associated with a two-fold increased risk. The study was published in the British Medical Journal. Study Adds Blurred Vision to Bladder Cancer Risks from Actos

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) June 21, 2012

The Actos Resource Center, a patient advocacy group, is alerting those patients who have taken the drug Actos for their type II diabetes of a British study released this month which links the medication to macular edema. This is in addition to previous studies associating the drug with bladder cancer.

Anyone who has experienced symptoms of blurred vision, heart problems or bladder cancer after taking Actos is encouraged to visit their doctor and speak with a lawyer about their legal options.

For more than a year, warnings have surfaced over the safety of extended use of Actos. On June 10, 2011, CBS News reported that Germany and France had banned Actos after a study indicated long-term use could increase bladder cancer occurrences by as much as 40%. The FDA followed up on June 15, 2011 by issuing its own alert about the drug.

In April, the Canadian Press reported that Health Canada was issuing a warning after a study there showed a greater than 40% increased risk of bladder cancer from Actos. On May 31st, the British Medical Journal published a study from McGill University in Montreal finding the increased bladder cancer risks from long-term Actos use may actually be as high as 83%.

Now, on June 14, 2012, the Archives of Internal Medicine reported a study from the University of Nottingham which suggests that drugs like Actos can double or triple the risk of macular edema. The disease occurs when fluid leaks into the center of the eye?s macula, causing blurred vision.

Studying more than 100,000 people with Type 2 diabetes, British researchers found that 1.3% of patients taking a drug like Actos after a year developed macular edema, compared to 0.2% of patients not on the medications.

Anyone who has suffered bladder cancer, heart disease or vision problems while taking Actos is urged to speak with a lawyer about their legal options. According to Bloomberg News on March 13, 2012, Takeda Pharmaceuticals could face as many as 10,000 lawsuits in the U.S. from patients suffering serious side effects from their drug.

A federal Judicial Panel has consolidated all Actos lawsuits to a special multi-district federal court in Louisiana. The case is known as In Re: Actos Products Liability Litigation, MDL 2299, U.S. District Court, Western District of Louisiana (Lafayette).

The Actos Resource Center cautions anyone affected that it is important to choose a lawyer with experience in these types of MDL cases. The Actos Resource Center works only with qualified Actos lawyers who are actively involved in this litigation and have handled thousands of cases.

For more information on the a possible actos class action lawsuit, research, warnings, side effects and legal options relating to the drug Actos, or to speak with a lawyer, visit http://www.ActosCancer.com.
