Knowing the Ropes Can Be a Lifeline for Parents
Middleport, NY (PRWEB) September 21, 2006
Parents are always calmed and assured when they find someone who has been through something before them. Each stage in a child?s development has its own challenges that can cause a parent experiencing what may be typical behavior, to doubt themselves and their parenting skills. Sharing lessons learned, along with a little laughter, can be a valuable and reassuring aid to a parent experiencing these stages for the first time.
We all know the joys of the first smile, the first words, and the tentative first steps, which are treasured and stored safely in a parent?s mental photo album. ?It?s a good thing these tender memories are stored away because soon a parent may need to cling to them for dear life during puberty,? according to Mary Fagan, a teacher, mother and creator of the First Times Greeting Cards for Parents.
First Times cards were developed for use during the turbulent years of adolescence when a once mild-mannered son or daughter takes on some salty characteristics. Fagan says signs of this include overhearing words coming from their mouths that would make a sailor blush, getting tattoos and piecing body parts that would be considered torture if the parent had suggested it, and mood swings. She also notes that the first time these signs surface, they hit a parent hard. Parents need to know that they are not alone when this happens.
Fortunately, there are other parents to lean on that have found their sea legs and who are willing to offer their advice and support. They can provide assurance to other less knowledgable parents that they are not the only parent ever told they were stupid, hated, mean, old- fashioned, a dork or the only one to say ?no.? “The first time these things happen, they hit a parent hard, but revived with the realization that you are not the only parent listing to the stern, you can survive a roiling adolescence as it rolls in, and over you, again and again and again,? says Fagan.
Whether it?s a parent?s first experience with PMS, backtalk, swearing, or disagreements over clothing, these specialized greeting cards can be lifesavers tossed in a parent?s direction when they need support. Each inspirational card for parents experiencing a ?first time” has a lighthearted line of wisdom and advice to navigate a parent through their teens turbulent times and to let them know that they are not alone.
First Times Greeting Cards for Parents, available for downloading at http://www.motherwise.us, cover many of puberty?s typical parenting challenges and are perfect for a fellow parent filled with self-doubt, preventing them from second guessing, or the sinking feeling that they are losing it.
