Head Out Your Backdoor for the Great American Backyard Campout June 28

Reston, VA (Vocus) June 17, 2008

What: Great American Backyard Campout

High gas prices keeping you at home? You?re not alone. This spring America witnessed the steepest decline in driving since 1942. Instead of packing up and hitting the road, here?s an idea for family fun, no further than your backdoor. The National Wildlife Federation encourages parents and kids alike to trade their website for a campsite.

Turn off computers, TVs, iPods, Wiis, MP3 players, cell phones and all things high tech, to experience a night with Mother Nature, listen for nocturnal wildlife (maybe even see a few), star-gaze, cook outdoors, tell stories about Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster, and explore a whole other world right in their own backyard.

Last year over 42,000 people from around the country participated in the Great American Backyard Campout. You don?t need to go to Yosemite National Park to experience the great outdoors and the wonders it has to offer. Just open up your backdoor! June has been officially designated Great Outdoors Month by the White House and more than half of America?s governors and what better way to celebrate.

Where: Backyards across America

When: Saturday night, June 28, 2008

Who: Families, friends, neighbors, and communities

Why: This initiative is part of a National Wildlife Federation campaign to rescue our nation?s kids from what famed author Richard Louv calls ?nature deficit disorder.? Research now shows that kids spend an average of 44 hours per week staring at electronic screens, TV, video games and computers — for the first time in our country?s history; we have an entire generation that is growing up disconnected from nature.

This can lead to a weaker immune system, greater dependency on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) drugs, lost creativity, less self-sufficiency, lack of interest in maintain the wildlife legacy they have inherited. To say nothing of the good old fashioned fun they are missing.

Getting Started:

The National Wildlife Federation is providing everything you need to head out into the great outdoors called your backyard. The web site has packing lists, recipes, nocturnal wildlife guides, exploration activities, nature guides. Check it out at http://www.backyardcampout.org. People can even sign up on the site to share their campout plans and experiences.

American Century Investments LIVESTRONG? Portfolios Receive an ?A? Grade in Study of Target Date Funds

Kansas City, Mo. (PRWEB) July 17, 2012

American Century Investments? LIVESTRONG? Portfolios received an overall grade of ?A? in a new report analyzing target date mutual funds and the asset management firms offering the popular investment options. Called ?Popping the Hood V, 2012? and released by BrightScope and Target Date Analytics, this is the third study by the joint researchers in which LIVESTRONG was among the top grade earners. In both the 2007 and 2011 ?Popping the Hood? analyses, American Century garnered the top overall score of all fund families.

BrightScope (http://www.brightscope.com) is a leading independent financial information and investment research firm, and Target Date Analytics (http://www.ontargetindex.com) is an independent provider of analysis, theory and benchmarking of target date funds. Their ?Popping the Hood? series of reports are designed to help defined contribution plan sponsors with due diligence responsibilities when selecting and monitoring target date funds.

?We?re pleased that the researchers at BrightScope and Target Date Analytics have once again given our LIVESTRONG Portfolios an A grade,? said American Century Investments? Rich Weiss, senior vice president and senior portfolio manager on the LIVESTRONG Portfolios team. ?We designed the funds with the goal of reducing volatility and improving risk-adjusted performance, which we believe are important considerations for plan sponsors and advisors when selecting a target date series.?

The 2012 study assigns letter grades from A to F to target date mutual fund families based on five categories: company/organization, strategy, performance, risk and fees. Each fund series receives an overall grade, as well as grades on individual categories. Researchers analyzed 49 fund series offered by 41 different fund companies. Overall letter grades were assigned to 42 fund series old enough to have at least three years of operating performance data. The study used 2011 performance data for the lowest price share class offered by each fund family, typically the institutional share class.

LIVESTRONG Portfolios received an A overall grade and an A for ?company/organization,? the researchers assessment of the quality of the organization behind the funds.

In its commentary about the LIVESTRONG Porfolios, BrightScope/Target Date Analytics wrote: ?The American Century LIVESTRONG Portfolios continue to turn in top Overall results, earning another Overall ?A? this year. First introduced in 2004, this fund family now has seven years1 of return history.? The researchers also concluded: ?The American Century LIVESTRONG Portfolios also scored at the top in our last two comprehensive studies, Popping the Hood III and IV, with data through December 31, 2007 and December 31, 2010 respectively. They have a very solid offering, and with so much going for them, it is easy to see how they have grown their assets under management to over $ 5 billion2. We think more plan sponsors and consultants should be giving American Century a look.?

A LIVESTRONG Portfolio?s target date is the approximate year when investors plan to start withdrawing their money. The principal value of the investment is not guaranteed at any time, including at the target date.

Each target-date LIVESTRONG portfolio seeks the highest total return consistent with its asset mix. Each year, the asset mix and weightings are adjusted to be more conservative. In general, as the target year approaches, the portfolio?s allocation becomes more conservative by decreasing the allocation to stocks and increasing the allocation to bonds and money market instruments. By the time each fund reaches its target year, its target asset mix will become fixed and will match that of LIVESTRONG Income Portfolio.

American Century Investments is a leading privately held investment management firm, committed to delivering superior investment performance and building long-term client relationships since 1958. Serving investment professionals, institutions, corporations and individual investors, American Century Investments offers a variety of actively managed investment disciplines through an array of products including mutual funds, institutional separate accounts, commingled trusts and sub-advisory accounts. Past performance is no guarantee of future results. Investment return and fund share value will fluctuate and it is possible to lose money by investing in these funds.

The BrightScope and Target Date Analytics ?Popping the Hood V, 2012? study grades target date mutual fund families on five criteria, including performance, fees, risk, organizational structure and strategy. The Overall Score for each fund family is simply the product of the scores of the five major components, weighted as follows: Company/Organization: 10%; Strategy: 15%; Performance: 30%; Risk: 25%; Fees: 20%. Each fund series receives an overall score and ranking. Researchers analyzed 49 fund companies, but ranked only 42; those were the fund series old enough to have three years of operating performance data. The study uses 2011 performance data. The study is based on the lowest price share class offered by each fund family, typically the institutional share class. The investor class, A, C, and R share classes are subject to higher expenses. Please consult the prospectus for the eligibility for each specific share class.

The performance of the portfolios is dependent on the performance of their underlying American Century Investments funds and will assume the risks associated with these funds. The risks will vary according to each portfolio?s asset allocation, and a fund with a later target date is expected to be more volatile than one with an earlier target date.

Support LIVESTRONG – The management company of American Century will financially support LIVESTRONG, and investors in LIVESTRONG Portfolios can influence that support. Every dollar invested in LIVESTRONG Portfolios will help determine the amount the management company of American Century will pay LIVESTRONG above a guaranteed amount.

American Century Investment Services, Inc., Distributor, has entered into an agreement with the Lance Armstrong Foundation for rights to use the LIVESTRONG name. Under this agreement, every dollar invested in LIVESTRONG Portfolios through 2016 will help determine the amount the management company of American Century Investments will pay the Lance Armstrong Foundation above a guaranteed amount. Under limited circumstances, the agreement can be terminated by either party, and there will be no future payments.

American Biographer a Smash Hit in Europe

Westlake, LA (PRWEB) January 26, 2006

U.S. author James Bailey is making a big splash on the worldwide publishing stage with his hilarious biography, ?Man, Interrupted?.

Bailey has had many highs and lows, from being a long time friend of Hollywood producer Mel Brooks, to being homeless, to suffering from a lifelong battle with obsessive compulsive disorder.

It is the later fact that Bailey?s new book ?Man, Interrupted? revolves around, and takes the reader through the time the author spent living in a clinic for treatment and eventually overcoming the disorder. Unlike most books that tackle the subject with a serious tone, Bailey?s book takes a light-hearted approach to life with OCD, and takes readers on a trip to see what it is really like to live in a building full of people who are either afraid to flush the toilet, or afraid to stop flushing the toilet.

Along the way we learn how very hard it is to overcome even the most irrational fears, and the trials and tribulations of James and his fellow patients really tear at your heart strings and leave the reader feeling real connection with the patients and loss as they complete their time at the clinic. Of course the healthy dose of humor provided by James? forced interaction with drug dealers to overcome his fear, and his obsessive need to pick up young Asian women also provide more than a couple of laughs.

The book is a smash hit in Europe, quickly on its way to best-seller status there, garnering reviews in the Yorkshire Post, Western Mail, Daily Ireland and more. The North American edition of ?Man, Interrupted? (ISBN: 0-9739465-2-0) by James Bailey is published by Open Book Press and is just now hitting stores and online retailers across the U.S. and Canada. Open Book Press purchased the North American publishing rights from European publisher Mainstream Publishing in fall 2005.

American Psychiatric Association to Spotlight Symposium on ‘Hot Topics in Afro-American Mental Health’

New Orleans, LA (PRWEB) March 10, 2010

Dr. Smith and his team will present challenges in treating blacks in mental health, HIV and other taboo topics including, HIV and African American men ?on the down low.? The Center for Disease Control defines the phrase, ?on the down low? or ?on the DL,? as the ?behavior of men who have sex with other men as well as women and who do not identify as gay or bisexual.? The risks associated with this activity present widespread challenges for HIV prevention professionals. The stigma of homosexuality and the secretive nature of this problem results in a number of women showing up in clinics around the country diagnosed with HIV.

In the general population, ?there is an alarming over-representation of Afro-Americans in the United States living with HIV and a large number have critical mental health needs as well,? says Dr. Smith. Mental health concerns in African Americans are supported by the frequently misdiagnosis for schizophrenia rather than a more accurate diagnosis of bipolar disorder or other affective disorders in non-HIV patients.

William Lawson, M.D., Ph.D., DFAPA, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Howard University College of Medicine and Hospital, Washington, D.C., will address the unique psychopharmacological findings in the black community. One of the common challenges in treating and identifying mental disorders, according to Dr. Lawson is the ?lack of research participation by African American patients and investigators in treatment development.? Patients are suspicious and providers fail to engage the patient in discussions of these problems.

There is a glaring deficit in the use of mental health services by African Americans in the United States. According to a 1999 Surgeon General?s Report:

????Overall, only one-third of Americans with mental illness or a mental health problem get care. Yet, the percentage of African Americans receiving needed care is only half that of non-Hispanic whites. One study reported that nearly 60% of older African American adults were not receiving needed services.

????Nearly 1 in 4 African Americans is uninsured, compared to 16% of the U.S. population. Rates of employer-based health coverage are just over 50% for employed African Americans, compared to over 70% for employed non-Hispanic whites. Medicaid covers nearly 21% of African Americans.

Another expert presenter on the team, Janet Taylor, M.D., Clinical Instructor of Psychiatry at Columbia University affiliated Harlem Hospital in New York, and frequent contributor to CBS ?The Early Show,? and NBC ?The Today Show.? Dr. Taylor will discuss Women?s Mental Health issues. African American women are least likely of all subgroups to seek help in mental health issues. Their reasons may include; lack of insurance, mistrust of the medical community or reliance on family and religious support instead of seeking medical help. As a contributor to O, the Oprah Magazine, Dr. Taylor?s involvement from a grassroots effort is where she makes the most impact in the community. ?Being on the frontline with individuals and their families battling the emotional and economic impact of mental illness is where I can make a difference,? says Dr. Taylor.

Harriet Washington, award-winning bioethics journalist and author of ?Medical Apartheid,? will discuss the Impact of Past and Current Prejudices. In her book, Washington dissects the dark history of medical experimentation on African Americans from colonial times to the present. She discusses the past and present ethical issues in the treatment of individuals suffering from mental illness and chemical dependency in America. Medical Apartheid clearly paints a vivid, yet disturbing, picture of why African Americans have an innate mistrust of the medical establishment. Washington chronicles the history of African Americans being used as human guinea pigs in experiments from, Thomas Jefferson exposing hundreds of slaves to an untried smallpox vaccine before using it on whites, to the infamous Tuskegee Syphilis Study, in which black syphilitic men were observed, but not treated in order to document the long term effects of the disease.

Although most of the symposium will focus on African American mental health issues, a segment headed by Zack Cernovsky, Ph.D., Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Western Ontario, Canada, will discuss the issues from a Canadian perspective. Dr. Cernovsky will describe the attempt of the current head of the infamous Pioneer Fund, J.P. Rushton, to influence physicians and psychiatrists, to believe in the genetic inferiority of blacks. The Pioneer Fund is a non-profit organization, established in 1937, to advance the scientific study of heredity and human differences. Scientific scrutiny shows that Rushton?s methodology (e.g., measuring head circumference by tape as a substitute for IQ tests) and his generalizations from inadequate samples discredit his work.
