Cognitive Behavioral Therapy/Dialectical Behavior Therapy Course Added to HealthForumOnline?s Continuing Education (CE) Library for Mental Health Professionals

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) July 20, 2011

HealthForumOnline (HFO), a nationally-approved (APA, ASWB, NBCC, PSNA, CA-BBS) provider of online continuing education (CE) for psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses and other allied healthcare professionals announces the addition of a new online CE/CEU course, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Mindfulness and Other Core Mechanisms to their extensive online CE resource library.

For decades, Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) has been an empirically supported clinical intervention in the treatment of various psychological, as well as medical, illnesses. CBT typically includes psychoeducation, identification and monitoring of negative automatic thoughts, challenge of cognitive biases, and guided exposure to imagined and/or real situations to overcome anxiety and avoidance. CBT is also an ideal intervention to facilitate coping with health-related distress in association with medical procedures/treatments, health-related lifestyle changes, or chronic disease management across the disease continuum.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), created by psychologist Marsha M. Linehan, was developed from the fundamentals of CBT and is effective when thoughts cannot be restructured or challenged using CBT. DBT weds the change-oriented techniques of CBT with acceptance strategies consistent with those of Zen practice, such as mindfulness. Mindfulness has been defined by Jon Kabat-Zinn, leader of the integration of mindfulness into modern Western medicine, as paying attention in a particular way on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally. Other DBT treatment components include instruction in distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Both CBT and DBT strategies are intended to be practiced by patients in their everyday lives to help them build acceptance and make change. When combined with the use of CBT strategies, DBT-related skills and techniques, such as mindfulness practice, may enable patients faced with chronic or acute illness to identify and regulate their health-related maladaptive thoughts, feelings, and emotions. This not only enhances their ability to cope with the moment-by-moment demands and challenges of their illness, but also positively influences their basic immune function. Thus, together these interventions have the potential to directly and indirectly improve psychological and physical well-being.

This new online CE course from HFO will review the development of CBT and DBT as well as summarize the basic underlying mechanisms of action associated with each therapy, such as mindfulness skills. Further, relevant research on the uses and efficacy of each therapy is provided so that clinicians may integrate these therapeutic techniques into their clinical practice.

This is the first online CE course from Dr. Stella Bitran for HealthForumOnline. A licensed psychologist, Dr. Bitran is a nationally-recognized speaker and published author on anxiety and mood disorder and an expert in CBT and DBT. She is on staff in the Psychiatry Department of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) as well as The Counseling Center of Nashua and serves is an instructor in psychology at Harvard Medical School.

Psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses and other allied health professionals can chose from HFO?s 20 categories of continuing education (CE) topics related to health psychology and behavioral medicine (i.e., ethics, cancer adaptation, women?s health, cultural diversity, eating disorders, reproduction/sexuality, aging/gerontology, pediatric behavioral medicine, assessment, chemical dependency, chronic/acute illness, clinical intervention, group therapy, infectious disease, long-term care, neuropsychology, pain management, spirituality, LGBT issues) containing more than 70 online CE courses that are fast, convenient and cost-effective. All HFO CE courses and supporting materials are available online or as downloadable, transportable PDFs. Participants print their own CE certificates. Lastly, HFO routinely updates our online CE courses and enables customers to review these updates for free even after they have completed the CE activity and generated their CE certificate.

For more information on this course or a complete listing of titles in our online CE resource library, visit HealthForumOnline.com.

About HealthForumOnline:

HealthForumOnline (HFO) is approved as a provider of CE courses by the American Psychological Association, the National Board of Certified Counselors, the Association of Social Work Boards, and several state professional organizations, including the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center?s Commission on Accreditation, and the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. HFO?s CE Program?s Advisory Committee and authors are comprised of over 60 nationally-recognized experts in behavioral medicine.

Author J. Michael Mahoney Has Spent Decades Researching Mental Illness; His Book Details Startling Reason Behind Nearly All Schizophrenic Behavior

Washington, DC (Vocus) April 19, 2010

Mankind has long searched for the cause and meaning of madness. Now, author and former Atlanta Journal Constitution writer J. Michael Mahoney says that he has uncovered the cause and meaning of schizophrenia. Not surprisingly, Mahoney?s findings are generating controversial ripples across the mental health industry.

His book Schizophrenia: The Bearded Lady Disease provides what the author says are ?numerous documented case histories and theoretical constructs which clearly illuminate the origins of madness?.

In Schizophrenia: The Bearded Lady Disease, Mahoney has compiled a comprehensive collection of over 600 quotations, each followed by his explanatory comment, all which he says ?point inexorably to the factor of unconscious bisexual conflict/gender confusion as forming the basic etiological role in all functional mental illness, including schizophrenia. Bisexual conflict and gender confusion lie at the core of all mental illnesses, from slight neurosis up to and including the most acute forms of schizophrenia.?

Mahoney is an Ivy League graduate, former federal government employee, Air Force veteran and journalist with stints as a reporter in Ohio, Georgia and as a foreign correspondent in Africa. After reporting a series of stories on mental illness piqued his interest in psychology, Mahoney has devoted years of attention the research that has led to the publication of Schizophrenia: The Bearded Lady Disease. He is also the author of the book TOPSY TURVY.

Association for Behavior Analysis International Brings Leading Behavior Experts to Chicago Convention

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) April 23, 2008

Behavior impacts every aspect of our daily lives, from the family dinner table to the classroom, the boardroom to the election booth. For more than 70 years, the science of behavior analysis has sought to explain behavior and to develop scientifically based strategies for addressing real world problems. Recently, this groundbreaking science has earned greater recognition with mainstream audiences, especially for its success in treating autism. However, the impact of applied behavior analysis (ABA) extends far deeper into our society, as will be highlighted when the world’s top behavior experts assemble in Chicago from May 23 through May 27 for the Association for Behavior Analysis International Convention.

The five-day event will feature a presidential scholar’s address by internationally renowned economist and Nobel Laureate Dr. Gary Becker, who will discuss how behavioral economics can be used to explain marriage and divorce rates in the United States. Becker, who has also been awarded the National Medal of Science and Presidential Medal of Freedom, was one of the founders of the principle that education is an investment in human capital.

The event will be kicked off with the Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis Awards, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the science. One of this year’s award recipients is author Amy Sutherland, whose New York Times article and subsequent best-selling book What Shamu Taught Me About Life, Love and Marriage, has brought worldwide attention to the topic of behavioral interventions.

More than 1,500 presentations will be given during the convention, with a vast array of timely and compelling news and research topics. Just a few of these include:

Behavioral Economics – The marriage of economics and psychology, behavioral economics is one of the hottest areas of contemporary science, as reflected in the popular press (Freakonomics) and scholarly recognition (Nobel Prize). Leading behavioral economist Dr. Gregory Madden will present the latest discoveries in this dynamic field.

Preschoolers and Will Power: How self-control and delayed gratification abilities in children impact the course of their lives – Dr. Walter Mischel of Columbia University is one of the most highly regarded psychologists of his time. He invented the paradigm of self-control in kids in the 1960s and 1970s and has reported longitudinal data showing that kids who behave impulsively are more likely to have problems in school, run-ins with the law, etc., while their counterparts who demonstrate greater self-control are more likely to be successful later in life, with college degrees and satisfying careers.

Voters’ Quandary 2008 – As the presidential election approaches, this esteemed panel of experts will provide a better understanding of how voters make their choices, including how voters can defend themselves against misleading emotional manipulations by candidates, political strategists and radio talk show hosts.

Autism and Adolescence – Adolescents with autism can present a special set of behavioral challenges. This important discussion will cover successful strategies for dealing with children with autism as they enter puberty, including such issues as aggression, masturbation, inappropriate touching, toilet training, social skills and problem solving.

“Greening” Behavior – In response to increasing social awareness of environmental preservation, a number of research studies will be presented using behavioral approaches to promote environmental consciousness, including energy conservation, paper use reduction and recycling.

Me vs. Us: Achieving Social Cooperation for the Greater Good – Dr. Howard Rachlin will discuss his groundbreaking work in human social behavior to explore whether behavioral methods can be extended from the individual to the group. Under what conditions do people cooperate rather than compete? Can the best interests of the group (altruism) win out over individual self-interest? Dr. Rachlin will explore how behavior patterns can be reinforced and evolve over the lifetime of individuals by a process similar to biological evolution. There are far-reaching implications from this work in terms of social justice and public policy.

Beating the Odds: Combating Pathological Gambling – Researchers will reveal the findings of recent studies on pathological gambling behaviors in different populations, including college students, smokers and seniors in nursing homes. The discussion also includes new assessment tools which not only identify whether or not an individual has a gambling addiction, but what the underlying reason for the addiction is.

Not by Genes Alone: How Culture Transformed Human Evolution – What influences a person when he or she chooses how to behave? Sometimes we choose what to do based on a rational weighing up of pros and cons, but we are also influenced by what we have learned, what we believe is right, what others expect of us and so on. And most of us feel that there is also an influence of what is sometimes called “human nature.” One way to get a grip on all this complexity is use Darwinian theory to consider how the unique brain and behavior of humans might have evolved. Dr. Peter Richerson will tell the story of how genes and culture co-evolved in the human lineage.

Do No Harm: Behavioral Approaches to Decreasing Medical Errors – Errors in the delivery of healthcare services are estimated to account for 90,000 deaths per year in the United States. Many of these deaths are traceable to failures in team coordination and communication among healthcare workers. A new simulation-based assessment and training system is being developed for the healthcare field, following many of the strategies used in other high-risk industries, such as aviation.

The convention, which will be held at the Hilton Chicago, is expected to attract approximately 4,000 attendees from about 40 countries, including scientists, applied researchers, undergraduate and graduate students, teachers, parents and consultants. Now in its 34rd year, the convention is held on Memorial Day weekend each year in a different U.S. city.

Credentialed members of the news media may attend free of charge with advanced approval. Please contact Bridget Palitz or Leah Yam at (619) 291-1234 by Tuesday, May 20 to reserve your press pass or to schedule interviews.

Dog Behavior Specialist Warns of Increase in Dog Bites

Solon, OH (PRWEB) June 15, 2010

Karen Arnoff, Cleveland, Ohio?s premier dog behavior specialist and expert witness and investigator with dog related legal issues warns that now is the time to watch out for unforeseen dog aggression. ?I see more dog bite and other dog aggression cases in the spring and summer than at any other time of year,? says Ms. Arnoff. ?And, it makes sense, she says, ?if you look at it from the dog?s point of view.? Some of the contributing factors she identifies are:

1. Puppies adopted during the cold winter season may not get socialized to all the stimuli found outside during the summer. They are likely to view playful children, joggers, speeding bikers and moving trucks as prey. In addition, dogs that have not been properly socialized may exhibit not only predatory aggression but defensive aggression as well.

2. In the spring and summer, fall/winter puppies start to reach puberty. With puberty comes territorial marking by them and other dogs. That invisible communication (that is like a neon light to dogs) can be the start of dog fights in the neighborhood.

3. Also, with puberty comes more protective and pack aggression in general.

4. In hotter weather, dogs may become irritable and react aggressively, even to stimuli they previously tolerated. (Children running, noise, etc.).

Dog owners need to know that their dogs? behaviors are dynamic. And, as their dogs change physically and socially and react to their ever-changing environment, their behavior can also change. Dogs need to be socialized appropriately and receive pro-active anti-aggressiveness training. Ms. Arnoff says, ?I often hear bewildered clients say about their dog, ?But he never bit anyone before.? But Ms. Arnoff warns, ?There is never a bite before the first bite – but there are warning signs. Knowing those warning signs and being proactive can prevent spring/summer dog aggression and many unexpected bites.?

Some of the warning signs are growling and backing away. For more information and other warning signs contact The DOG-OWNER CONNECTION at 440-349-5022.

Sunset Bay Academy Explains How Teen Oppositional Defiant Behavior Disrupts the Peace of Families

San Diego, CA (Vocus/PRWEB) February 23, 2011

When dealing with our sons or daughters disruptive behaviors such as tantrums, arguments, anger, etc. that are causing family unrest on regular occurrences, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) may be the reason, that is causing these types of conduct in youngsters.

Most teens have their complicated moments where they get moody, argumentative and overall challenging, but as parents we must pay close attention and learn to discern between a ?moment? or if it has become a behavior that occurs on a regular basis; particularly if this is not only towards us, as their parents, but also towards other authority figures.

One can wonder, what is ODD besides behavior issues? What causes ODD? What are the risk factors of ODD? How can it be diagnosed? How is ODD treated?

The symptoms related to ODD are hard to tell apart from normal behavior, especially if we are dealing with a teenager and more so if they come from an emotional or determined personality. ODD is a developmental disorder marked by defiant, hostile, and negative behavior, but without the serious antisocial characteristics observed in conduct disorder. In actual fact, some symptoms of ODD are very similar to behaviors expected during adolescence, but when this type of conduct in a teenager becomes an everyday struggle to the family, home, and/or school and continues for a period of at least six months, we must consider Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

The symptoms we must reflect on, in regards to Teen ODD are disobedience, resentment and anger towards others, spiteful or vindictive behavior with adults, argumentative with adults, loss of temper, aggressive towards peers, deliberate annoyance of others, blames others for mistakes, difficulty maintaining friendships, easily annoyed, acting irritably, refuses to comply with adult rules and requests, just to mention a few.

Typically these patterns of behavior are only showed towards adults that our teens are familiar with. The disorder often accompanies other problems, such as anxiety, depression and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and is frequently associated with academic problems.

The cause of this disorder is still unidentified, but experts believe that it might be a combination of inherited and environmental factors as well as parenting and it can start showing during early stages of childhood, typically by age eight. ODD cannot be diagnosed by blood testing or physical testing. Our teens must have developed certain patterns of conduct set by the American Psychiatric Association. As mentioned before, patterns of Abnormal Behavior in Teens must be present for more than six months and must meet four out of eight decisive factors. The behavior must cause significant repercussions at home or school and often may not be detected during clinical interviews.

Some possible risk factors we must take into account are having a close relative, such as a parent or guardian, with a mood or substance abuse disorder; lack of positive parent involvement with teen, coming from a severely troubled marriage; parents with a background of ODD, ADHD or behavioral issues; coming from a unstable family and instability within the home such as multiple moves, school changes etc. Other risk factors include lack of supervision, being abused or neglected and exposure to violent behaviors.

The best treatment that is known to help us, for a teen and the family suffering the consequences of ODD, involves several types of psychotherapy, Individual and Family Therapy is helpful. Our involvement as parents? is crucial for this treatment since we learn behavioral management skills. These skills helps the entire family to understand each other, to create a neutral and safer environment in order to be able to discuss, cope and to ultimately work together to bring out a better behavior out of our teenager without resting more distress on our shoulders. At Sunset Bay Academy your family can find the help you have been looking for.
