Regardless of the Shady Grove Radiology location where a woman begins her breast care, she will be led through a screening process customized to her individual health needs. Every patient first receives an assessment of her lifetime risk for developing breast cancer. She then undergoes exams tailored to her unique breast cancer risk, which may include advanced screening tests for early detection.
This coordinated approach gives patients access to digital mammograms (available at five facilities across Montgomery County), as well as specialized services like breast ultrasound, breast MRI and minimally invasive biopsies available at the breast center. Patients can also receive genetic testing and step-by-step guidance for treatment of benign and malignant breast disease. Such patient-focused care — along with five convenient locations — ensures that every woman is treated with respect and compassion in a warm, comfortable setting close to home.

Sonya Kella, M.D., will lead Shady Grove Breast Center’s team of breast imaging specialists as its Medical Director. Dr. Kella came to Shady Grove Radiology from the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Georgetown is one of the most prestigious teaching and research hospitals in the nation, as well as an acclaimed leader in mammography and diagnostic breast imaging. Dr. Kella will play an integral role in Shady Grove Breast Center’s vision to provide women with a new level of world-class breast care.
?Having a mammogram, whether for routine screening or a clinical abnormality, can provoke much anxiety. As a breast radiologist, I feel a deep sense of duty to provide my patients an answer,” Dr. Kella said. “Most of the time, I can reassure them that their worst fear isn?t true. On the small number of occasions where we must conduct further tests, I devise the most effective plan to manage the abnormality ? whether it be advanced imaging, percutaneous tissue biopsy or, in rare cases, surgical excision. Patients deserve to know a definitive, accurate diagnosis ? and they deserve to know it right away.?
Shortening the time from diagnosis to treatment of breast cancer is one of the breast center’s foremost goals. In support of that objective, a designated nurse navigator guides women with an abnormal mammogram diagnosis through treatment and follow-up support. Patients also benefit from weekly meetings among medical professionals who assess each case.
The new Shady Grove Breast Center is located at 9711 Medical Center Drive, Suite 201, in Rockville, Maryland, on the campus of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. The breast center complements the other four Shady Grove Radiology locations throughout Montgomery County that offer mammography: Germantown Road in Germantown, Key West Avenue in Rockville, Montgomery Village Avenue in Montgomery Village, and Edmonston Drive in Rockville.
