CanDiag?s Early Breast Cancer Detection Focus Garners a $50,000 Win at Charlotte Venture Challenge

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (PRWEB) May 02, 2012

CanDiag, Inc., a spin-off of the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Charlotte focused on early-stage breast cancer detection, has been named the grand prize winner of the 2012 Charlotte Venture Challenge. CanDiag went head-to-head with 117 other startup companies for a prize pool of more than $ 100,000, including the $ 50,000 grand prize.

?CanDiag survived four rounds of competition against 117 amazing early-stage companies, proving itself to be one of the most innovative companies with high-growth potential in the Southeast,? said Devin A. Collins, Assistant Director of Business and Entrepreneurial Development, UNC Charlotte?s Charlotte Research Institute. ?The company is a prime example of what happens in the Charlotte Venture Challenge when innovative research is connected with an entrepreneurial team and mentors and then put to the test in front of experienced investors.?

The Charlotte Venture Challenge is the region?s premier business plan competition. It is organized by Charlotte Research Institute and The Ben Craig Center in an effort to accelerate the growth of scalable new ventures in the Charlotte region and build recognition of Charlotte as an innovation center.

Founded in 2011 by Pinku Mukherjee, Ph.D., Irwin Belk Endowed Professor for Cancer Research at UNC Charlotte, CanDiag acquired from the university exclusive license to a patent-pending tumor antibody with diagnostic applications spanning the life cycle of cancer patients, from detecting and locating cancer to treatment and monitoring for recurrence. It was based upon this antibody that CanDiag developed a simple blood test that has demonstrated unprecedented accuracy in detecting early-stage breast cancer.

In a pilot study with blood samples from breast cancer patients and healthy individuals, CanDiag?s test outperformed the commercially available tumor marker test, accurately detecting early-stage breast cancer when the latter failed to do so. CanDiag?s test also returned no false-positive results, compared to a 50 percent false-positive rate for the commercial test.

?The anticipated impact of this blood test is twofold: greater peace of mind for women through more accurate testing and improved survival with early detection. It also is expected to lower healthcare costs by eliminating the need for redundant and expensive testing,? said Dr. Mukherjee, CEO and Chief Scientific Officer, CanDiag. ?It is an honor to have won the Charlotte Venture Challenge, and we are excited by the growth opportunities it creates for CanDiag.?

As the grand prize winner, CanDiag receives a $ 50,000 convertible-debt note from Charlotte-based venture capital fund, Vaterra Capital. The investment will pave the way for further clinical validation and regulatory approval of its blood test, which may also have diagnostic implications for other forms of cancer.

Further, while CanDiag is initially focused on diagnostics, it also holds an exclusive option to license the therapeutic rights to the tumor antibody. This sets the stage for development of future therapeutic applications, the potential for which has been demonstrated by UNC Charlotte.

About CanDiag, Inc.

CanDiag is a University of North Carolina (UNC) at Charlotte spin-off that has licensed a patent-protected technology from the university with applications spanning the life cycle of cancer patients, from detecting and locating cancer to treatment and monitoring for recurrence. In a pilot study with blood samples from breast cancer patients and healthy individuals, CanDiag?s test outperformed the market tumor marker test in both detection and accuracy. The organization is raising funds for a pivotal clinical study of its blood test and will pursue additional diagnostic, imaging and therapeutic product development and commercialization based upon its tumor antibody technology.

Mobile Commons Partners with National Cancer Institute to Help Teens Quit Smoking via Text Message

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 16, 2012

Mobile Commons announced today it has partnered with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, to use text messaging to help teens and young adults quit smoking. Developed by smoking cessation experts, SmokefreeTXT provides the targeted advice and encouragement that young people need to quit smoking ? all via text message. The text messages run in both English and Spanish, and the content is paced according to the recipient?s individual quit date. This announcement also marks the launch of Mobile Commons? new health care edition ? Mobile Commons for Health ? which will allow the health care industry to integrate the power and reach of mobile messaging to improve health care outcomes.

?We are proud to partner with the National Cancer Institute on such an important and effective use of mobile messaging,? said Jed Alpert, CEO and Co-founder of Mobile Commons. ?We know how great the possibilities are for effecting real change through mobile messaging ? from helping heavy smokers quit smoking to motivating HIV+ patients to adhere to complicated medication regimens. Our new health edition will make it even easier for health care organizations of all types to drive healthy outcomes by reaching people on the device they use most ? their mobile phone.?

Mobile Commons for Health is a complete mobile messaging platform for the healthcare industry. Departments of health, health care providers and pharmaceutical companies can encourage (and track) behavior change and medication adherence, provide private counseling through a live text chat, and share vital health knowledge all on the mobile phone.

Young Adults and Text Messaging

Participants in NCI?s SmokefreeTXT campaign, powered by Mobile Commons, will receive text messages timed to their selected quit date and will continue receiving texts for up to six weeks following their target quit date ? a critical time period in the smoking cessation process. Teens and young adults can enter the program by texting QUIT to 47848 or through the SmokefreeTXT website.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention research shows that nearly 20 percent of teens currently smoke and 80 percent of adult smokers began before 18 years of age. By connecting with young smokers on their mobile phones, NCI looks to more effectively encourage them to quit with proven cessation tools and strategies.

Teens exchange an average of nearly 3,500 messages per month (according to Nielsen?s State of the Media: The Mobile Media Report from 2011) illustrating that text messaging remains the centerpiece of teens? mobile behavior.

Mobile Commons and Health

For nearly five years, Mobile Commons? award-winning service has helped public and private organizations quickly and easily reach their target audiences via mobile messaging. By using a technology available to almost everyone across the country ? nearly all cell phones support texting ? health care organizations can provide access to information and services for people of every socioeconomic status ? at a significantly lower cost ? with positive results that are four to five times greater than other channels.

Mobile Commons has helped numerous health care organizations create healthy outcomes for their target groups through mobile messaging programs. For example, the New York City Department of Health used Mobile Commons to create a citywide smoking cessation program; heavy smokers who received the texts were twice as likely to quit as those who did not. Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute?s text campaign motivated parents to get their children to eat healthier and exercise.

The new Mobile Commons for Health edition was designed based on years of powering health messaging and honing best practices for effectiveness. The edition?s user interface and APIs seamlessly integrate text, voice and web applications with customers? CRMs, databases and social marketing tools. Coupled with real-time analytics and reporting, Mobile Commons makes it easy for organizations to integrate mobile communications with their existing channels and databases.

About Mobile Commons

Resource Center Warns Increased Actos Use for Depression Could Lead to More Cases of Actos Bladder Cancer

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) May 11, 2012

The Actos Resource Center, a bladder cancer patient advocacy group, is alerting patients of the risks of bladder cancer from Actos after new research in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology indicated the drug may be beneficial in treating depression.

Actos, a popular treatment for type II diabetes, has been linked to bladder cancer by researchers in France, Germany, Canada and the United States in recent years. Researchers with Health Canada and the French Medicines Agency have discovered as much as a 40% increased risk of bladder cancer with long-term Actos use.

However, scientists recently found Actos may improve the effects of antidepressants in treating Major Depressive Disorder. Last week, the journal Neuropsychopharmacology published findings from researchers at Tehran University indicating patients given Actos along with antidepressant drugs reported more symptom relief.

Professor Shahin Akhondzadeh commented that the results were important since a large percentage of patients treated for depression fail to respond to the available antidepressant medications.

According to a Bloomberg report on June 9, 2011, Actos was already the most popular drug in the world for the treatment of type II diabetes. However, with the FDA estimating that 20% of Americans take antidepressant drugs, experts with the Actos Resource Center fear that millions more could be prescribed the drug to help with depression, putting more at risk of bladder cancer.

According to a Bloomberg report on March 13, 2012, Takeda Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly face as many as 10,000 Actos lawsuits from patients in the U.S. over bladder cancer allegedly caused by the drug.

A federal Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation has consolidated all of the lawsuits into a federal court in Louisiana. The case is known as In Re: Actos Products Liability Litigation, MDL 2299, U.S. District Court, Western District of Louisiana (Lafayette).

The Actos Resource Center cautions anyone considering taking Actos to speak with their doctor about the risks. Anyone diagnosed with bladder cancer after taking the drug should speak with a lawyer about their legal rights.

The Actos Bladder Cancer Center only works with qualified Actos lawyers who are actively involved in this litigation and have handled thousands of cases.

For more information on the research, actos warnings, side effects and legal options relating to the drug Actos, or to speak with a lawyer, visit ActosCancer.com.

Charleston, SC Schools ?Eat Up? Healthy Vending as Seven Area Schools Install Healthy Snack Machines – Local Cancer Survivor to Donate 1% Sales to Breast Cancer Research

Charleston, SC (PRWEB) May 02, 2012

Charleston, SC schools have embraced healthy vending and early results from machines sales indicate a strong appetite for the all-natural and organic snacks and beverages in new, state-of-the-art vending machines, announced Vend Natural (http://www.vendnatural.com). Vend Natural, one of the fastest-growing healthy vending companies in the U.S., has installed machines in six Charleston area schools with more scheduled installations in the coming weeks. These schools are a model for the state and the country, which is facing skyrocketing rates of obesity for both adults and teenagers.

Over the past several months, six schools in Charleston area Berkeley County school district – including Hanahan Middle and High School, Sangaree Middle, Westview Middle, Sedgefield Middle and College Park Middle – have installed new state-of-the art Vend Natural healthy vending machines as part of a strong commitment to wellness for students, staff and visitors. A seventh school in the Berkeley school district ? Cane Bay Middle School ? is scheduled to install a healthy vending machine in the coming weeks. The Vend Natural dual-zone machines carries a wide selection of both refrigerated drinks and ambient temperature snacks such as all natural chips and popcorn, low fat health bars, organic fruit smoothies, natural coconut water and more. All of the products available through Vend Natural meet or exceed federal, state and school nutritional standards for calories, fat, vitamins, fiber, sodium and more.

Commenting on the newly-installed machines, Hanahan Middle School?s Principal Robin Rogers said, ?This new vending solution was a top priority for our school to ensure that all of our students have access to healthier snacks and drinks with better nutritional components, which we know is crucial for learning.? He continued, ?Our Vend Natural machines are exceeding our expectations, as the kids are enjoying the new product selection and the school is enjoying a stronger revenue stream from commissions than anticipated. We are all thrilled and hope to see more schools in Berkeley and other neighboring school districts follow our lead.?

Vend Natural, founded by company CEO Gil Sanchez, is one of the fastest-growing healthy vending companies in the U.S. and was formed to address the declining health of our nation and skyrocketing teenage and adult obesity rates by providing healthier snacking alternatives to schools, hospitals and businesses. The company?s mission is to support improved eating practices by offering healthy products that are easily accessible and affordable to everyone.

Managing Vend Natural of the Carolinas is entrepreneur and breast cancer survivor Jan Moore. Jan?s personal story is compelling. Like many southerners, Jan was raised on fast food and southern style cooking. In 2007 and with no family history, Jan was suddenly diagnosed with breast cancer. Early detection and medical treatment saved her life and she is now cancer free. This experience compelled Jan to learn more about the impact and importance of good nutrition on health and motivated her to change her own and her family?s diet.

Jan commented, ?My unexpected battle with cancer opened my eyes to the role that diet plays in overall health and wellness. As a fast-food kid my whole life, it didn?t occur to me that diet could contribute to poor health. Now, I know all too well how essential it is to eat well for life. I knew that joining Vend Natural in Charleston would be a way to provide others in our community with access to healthier snacks and drinks, which is so important. I have even seen a major, positive change in my daughter?s ADHD since bringing home healthy snacks from our vending machines.?

She continued, ?To make that connection even clearer, I will donate 1% of sales from Vend Natural healthy vending to Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research. It is my hope that more schools, hospitals and businesses join with me in the battle for better health and bring delicious and healthier snacks and drinks to Charleston?s kids.?

Vend Natural is the only healthy snacking company in the country that not only partners with business owners coast to coast, but also owns and operates its own machines on the west and east coasts. This enables the company to test new equipment and products before full roll-out and provide the most relevant training and customer service operation for its distributors. ?We don?t just ?sell? the business, we are IN the business, which makes us significantly more knowledgeable about what works and what doesn?t,? said Mr. Carpenter. Vend Natural also enjoys an exclusive relationship with Del Monte Fresh Produce to provide fresh cut apples, pineapples, carrots, celery, bananas and more, to their customers.

Vending Machines Go Green: Good for the Body and the Planet

Vend Natural?s vending machines are not the old school machines you are used to. Today?s state of the art vending machines are not just good for the body, but have gone ?green.? They feature:

Energy efficient design, costing a third of what traditional machines cost to run.
-More than 40% recycled metals.

Fort Lauderdale Dermatologist To Offer Unprecidented Free Year-Round Skin Cancer Screenings

Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) May 14, 2012

In an effort that no human being ever die of melanoma again, Will Richardson, MD FAAD and his team at Natura Dermatology and Cosmetics have announced Free Screen Cancer Screenings at their Coconut Creek location, year-round beginning in May.

The Free Skin Cancer Screenings, sponsored by the American Academy of Dermatology (Academy) and Natura Dermatology & Cosmetics, will begin in May to kick off National Melanoma Month and will be offered year-round exclusively at Natura Dermatology & Cosmetics’ Coconut Creek office located at 6552 North State Road 7, Coconut Creek, FL 33073.

The screenings are part of a national campaign to encourage early detection and teach prevention of skin cancer as more than 3.5 million skin cancers in more than 2 million people are diagnosed annually.

The Academy?s national Melanoma /Skin Cancer Screening prevention program is in its 27th year and is intended to raise awareness of melanoma and urge Americans to regularly examine their skin for signs of this serious form of skin cancer.

Self skin-examinations consist of periodically looking over your body for any changes in the size, color, shape or texture of a mole, and the development of a new mole or any other unusual changes in the skin. Any of these signs should be reported to a dermatologist right away.

A survey commissioned by the Academy showed that more than a quarter of Americans never examine their skin for signs of melanoma and three in five have never been screened for skin cancer by a health care provider. Dr. Richardson wants to change this because when treated in its earliest stages, melanoma can be cured. If not treated early, the disease can quickly spread to other parts of the body and can be fatal. ?The key to the successful treatment of most types of cancer is early detection and treatment,? Dr. Richardson said. Current estimates are that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.

It was estimated that 123,590 new cases of melanoma would occur in 2011, and more than 8,790 people were expected to die of the disease. One American dies from melanoma almost every hour. More than 75 percent of skin cancer deaths are from melanoma. The members of the American Academy of Dermatology and Natura Dermatology & Cosmetics invite the public to take advantage of the free screenings throughout the year.

For more information or to schedule a free Skin Cancer Screening, call Natura Dermatology & Cosmetics at 954.537.4106.

Founded in 2006, Natura Dermatology & Cosmetics is wholly owned by Will Richardson, MD FAAD one of Fort Lauderdale?s premiere skin cancer prevention physicians and Mohs Surgery specialists.
