Polycom Video Collaboration Helps NHS Cumbria & Lancashire Cardiac and Stroke Network (CSNLC) Speed Treatment and Save Lives

London, UK (PRWEB UK) 17 January 2012

Polycom Inc. (Nasdaq: PLCM), the global leader in standards-based unified communications (UC), today announced that the NHS Cumbria & Lancashire Cardiac and Stroke Network ( CSNLC) is saving the lives of stroke victims by connecting patients with remote doctors in the time-critical early intervention stage of stroke using Polycom RealPresence high-definition video collaboration solutions. Polycom video solutions include mobile Practitioner carts* in each of the six Acute Trusts in Cumbria and Lancashire and personal video collaboration software* running on laptops in each of the consulting physician?s homes.

The need for an around the clock stroke service was the key driver behind the project. The combined NHS Trusts of Lancashire & Cumbria selected Polycom RealPresence video solutions as part of a new state of the art ?telestroke? service. Installed at the end of July 2011, the service has already positively impacted the treatment of 26 stroke patients in Cumbria and Lancashire by providing access to Thrombolysis treatment around the clock. ?In addition to huge patient benefits, the service is anticipated to save Lancashire & Cumbria NHS Trusts over ?8million a year,? said Kathy Blacker, Director of the CSNLC.

With Polycom video collaboration, patients get round-the-clock, on-demand, face-to-face access to expert specialist care ? no matter where the patients or the consulting doctors are located. Fifteen consultant stroke physicians are on call from home covering the service out of hours and supporting clinicians in each of the eight hospitals, servicing approximately 2.2 million people across the region. Polycom video collaboration software for laptops are used by the 15 consulting stroke physicians that are on call from their homes. Each consultant has a laptop equipped with Polycom videoconferencing software, which they use to connect to any of the six hospitals via a Polycom Practitioner Cart* at the patient?s bedside. Controlling a camera remotely, the specialist can see the detailed clinical examination performed by the clinician at the bedside. This results in more effective and productive use of scarce medical expertise through video, faster treatment times and improved outcomes for patients.

After reviewing the requirements for the area and considering all options, the CSNLC selected MultiSense Communications, a Polycom Healthcare Solution Provider, to deploy Polycom video solutions, along with other key technology partners including Virgin Media and Imerja to support the service. Funding was made available by the NHS to cover the cost of the equipment which included high-speed broadband technology to remotely connect eight Polycom Practitioner carts to each of the eight hospitals.

Dr. Mark O?Donnell, Stroke Consultant at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Clinical Lead for the CSNLC said: ?If a patient arrives in hospital with a stroke, outside the normal working day, a Telestroke consultation will then be commenced. The Polycom Practitioner cart contains a screen so the patient can see the consultant remotely and a camera for the consultant to view the patient. The consultant is then able to perform an examination with the help of the team in the hospital to decide whether the symptoms experienced are due to a stroke and whether Thrombolysis (the use of drugs to break up or dissolve blood clots) treatment is appropriate.?

?Thrombolysis treatment,? added Dr. O?Donnell, can only be given to patients within four hours of the onset of their stroke ? so time is crucial, and Telestroke helps improve the speed of patient diagnosis. We are using Polycom video collaboration technology to take the stroke specialists to the patient, rather than moving the patient long distances, around rural areas, to where the specialists work. In an acute stroke, time is of the essence and the sooner treatments can be provided, the better.?

NHS Surrey?s Stroke Service Uses Polycom Video Collaboration Solutions to Save Lives Through Remote Treatment

London, UK (PRWEB UK) 25 January 2012

Polycom Inc. (Nasdaq: PLCM), the global leader in standards-based unified communications (UC), today reported that the Telestroke Network Project at NHS Surrey, which was set up across five different trusts in September 2011, is already helping to save the lives of stroke victims by using Polycom high-definition video collaboration solutions to bring remote patients together face-to-face with medical professionals for vital early intervention.

The new telemedicine system gives the hospitals? stroke teams fast access to stroke consultant experts at any time of the day or night ? even when the consultant isn?t on-site. Getting specialist clinical advice quickly is essential so that on-site physicians can make treatment decisions quickly.

?There is only a very limited window between seeing the onset of symptoms and being able to administer thrombolysis (clot busting drug), so the time saved due to the newly installed telestroke system means that vital time is saved and increases significantly the potential of patients making a full recovery and going on to lead a normal life much more rapidly. It can even mean the difference between life and death, and we are already seeing positive results from the system?, said Colin Lee, Senior Project Manager, NHS Surrey. “Rather than waste valuable time waiting for a consultant to get to a patient, now a patient can have a CT scan, be seen by triage, assessed by a stroke consultant and have a recommendation in under an hour through Polycom HD video solutions ? all while the consultant is at his or her home.?

Supported by the Surrey Stroke and Heart Network and funded for ?250,000 by the NHS South of England, the Polycom video collaboration solution is making it possible for patients to get round-the-clock specialist, consultant-led care with faster treatment times and improved outcomes for patients. The Polycom video collaboration solution for the Telestroke Network Project includes two mobile Polycom Practitioner carts for each of the five hospitals, plus Polycom video collaboration software on laptops for each of nine consultant stroke physicians that are on call from their homes. Using Polycom video on laptops, the consultants connect to any of the Polycom Practitioner Carts in the five hospitals, right at the patient?s bedside. Controlling a camera remotely, the specialist can see the detailed clinical examination performed by the clinician at the bedside.

?Making 24/7 thrombolysis for stroke patients available at Surrey?s hospitals has been the focus of everyone in the Surrey Heart and Stroke Network for the past three years. We are all delighted that this has now become a reality,? said Felicity Dennis, Manager of the Surrey Heart and Stroke Network.

?The Polycom Practitioner cart is a simple but game-changing solution, which gives healthcare providers the means through video collaboration to treat more patients far more flexibly and cost-effectively,? said Andrew Graley, director of healthcare, Polycom EMEA. ?Patients are benefiting from on-demand access to scarce stroke experts, making it easier for family and caregivers to cope with and treat this life-threatening condition.?

Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute Announces Collaboration with Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., to Discover New Medicines for Alzheimer?s Disease and Neuropsychiatric Disorders

La Jolla, Calif. (Vocus/PRWEB) January 17, 2011

Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (Sanford-Burnham) has entered into a collaboration with Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., (OMJPI) to discover compounds for Alzheimer?s disease and major psychiatric disorders. Under the agreement, multi-disciplinary teams from Sanford-Burnham and OMJPI will collaborate to identify and validate new targets for drug discovery and will seek compounds suitable for lead optimization and further development by OMJPI.

OMJPI gains exclusive access for a three-year term to a multi-disciplinary team of world-class scientists and a translational infrastructure dedicated to finding new approaches to treating patients with devastating neurological and psychiatric conditions.

For Sanford-Burnham, the collaboration with researchers at a major pharmaceutical company will help the Institute achieve its mission of translating high-impact science into important new therapies. ?This represents the first of what we expect to be a series of thematic collaborations that focus our tremendous scientific and translational firepower on major unmet medical problems. Working in concert with strong partners, we can bridge the gap between early- and late-stage drug development,? said Dr. John Reed, CEO of Sanford-Burnham.

Sanford-Burnham will also receive funding including: upfront and yearly access fees, funding of discovery research in the field, milestone payments and royalties for successfully developed products. A joint steering committee will oversee the collaboration, which includes a drug discovery team funded by OMJPI in the Conrad Prebys Center for Chemical Genomics (CPCCG) at Sanford-Burnham.

CPCCG is Sanford-Burnham?s state-of-the-art screening facility established by the National Institutes of Health as part of a national effort to accelerate the rate of commercialization of basic research by generating small molecule probes that can be used to develop a pipeline of drugs to treat unmet medical needs. Sanford-Burnham?s drug discovery capabilities include: ultra high-throughput screening; high content screening; phenotypic screening; and target deconvolution technologies. CPCCG is led and staffed by industry-trained professionals who work closely with Sanford-Burnham investigators and industry collaborators to assist them in translating their scientific findings into actionable projects for new drug discovery.

?This agreement sets the stage for Sanford-Burnham to fully leverage the drug discovery infrastructure the Institute has put into place over the last five years,? said Dr. Michael Jackson, Vice President, Drug Discovery and Development at Sanford-Burnham.

Alzheimer?s disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks of daily living. Recent estimates from the Alzheimer?s Association put the number of people in the U.S. with Alzheimer?s at 5.3 million. While four drugs that temporarily improve cognitive function in Alzheimer?s patients are on the market, currently, there is no treatment available to stop the progression of Alzheimer?s disease.

Major psychiatric disorders, such as bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder and schizophrenia, are a huge burden on society. These conditions have their onset in adolescence or early adulthood, and impair overall health as well as the ability to learn, work and function in society. According to the National Institute of Mental Health 2.3 million adult Americans suffer from bipolar disorder, a condition associated with profound alterations of mood. Similar to other chronic health conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease, bipolar disorder and other major psychiatric illnesses must be treated and managed throughout a person?s life.
