Sierra Tucson Teams Raise Money for Awareness and a Cure

Tucson, AZ (PRWEB) April 29, 2011

The staff of Sierra Tucson, a premier treatment center and psychiatric hospital committed to helping people recover from addictions, mental/behavioral disorders, and chronic pain, demonstrated their compassion and joined the community to raise funds and awareness for two charity walks/runs in April 2011.

The first event benefited the National Alliance on Mental Illness with participation in NAMIWalks Southern Arizona on April 2, 2011. Sierra Tucson?s walk team joined hundreds of other Arizona agencies to walk for the cause. NAMI is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness. All proceeds from NAMIWalks will be used to fund NAMI?s programs which include support, education, advocacy, and encouragement of research involving mental illnesses (http://www.namisa.org).

The second event, on April 10, 2011, was to benefit the 13th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, a fundraising run and walk to support the Southern Arizona Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. This organization is working to better the lives of those facing breast cancer; to provide funding to local life-saving programs; and to increase education, screening, and treatment for those who otherwise could not afford it (http://www.komensaz.org). Sierra Tucson?s ?Team Toine? chose to race for the cure in support of their colleague and friend, Dr. Antoinette Giedzinska-Simons, who survived her battle with breast cancer, and to support the overall mission.

Holly Jindrick, Psy.D., Manager of Sierra Tucson?s Psychology Department, coordinated the staff participation in both walks. ?Both teams raised money to support these fabulous causes, and the added bonus was the additional fun and camaraderie that comes with joining in such events,? said Holly. ?Sierra Tucson looks forward to participating in the future and is proud of its runners and walkers!?

Beautiful Jewelry Benefits Multiple Causes: Rachel?s Cure by Design Announces Fundraising Partnerships

(PRWEB) July 12, 2012

Rachel?s Cure by Design (RCBD), a thriving social entrepreneurship that designs high-quality handmade jewelry and donates a portion of each sale to JDRF (formerly known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), is now partnering with additional nonprofit organizations in support of their causes.

In addition to supporting JDRF, Rachel?s partner fundraising organizations include: Children?s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation (CHPF); POWER (Pennsylvania Organization for Women in Early Recovery); Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Beaver County; Big Brothers and Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh; Blind and Vision Rehabilitation Services, and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN). Rachel has designed special bracelets expressly for each of these causes and a portion of proceeds from their sales are donated to both the partnering group and JDRF.

When she was just 12, Rachel Tobin, a creative and inspired young Pittsburgh woman diagnosed with T1D (type 1 diabetes), began designing and selling jewelry to donate a portion of the proceeds to JDRF. Rachel, who is now 19, has designed more than 100 unique styles of high-quality, glass, gem and beaded silver items, and has donated almost $ 50k for JDRF/WPA. Her immediate goal is to reach $ 100k to help fund a cure for T1D.

The concept resonated with other groups when the RCBD team shared the story of Rachel?s passion to create and sell beautiful, handmade jewelry that delivers a message of hope and supports a cause that?s deeply important to her. Each signature design includes a special hope charm that signifies both optimism for a diabetes cure and personal inspiration for those who wear Rachel?s jewelry.

?Rachel?s message of ?hope, passion, purpose? is universal and eloquently expresses how we at POWER feel about our mission to help women in recovery live their lives free of the awful burden of addiction,? said Rosa Davis, executive director of POWER. ?The spirit and beauty of Rachel?s designs are also reminders of the spirit and beauty within each of the women we serve at POWER. It was a natural fit to partner with Rachel to benefit both JDRF and POWER.?

?Children?s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation is grateful to have Rachel?s Cure by Design as a partner in philanthropy. We are dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children throughout the community and surrounding regions, and the support of partners like Rachel?s further our mission,? said Greg Barrett, President, Children?s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation.

RCBD jewelry is available for purchase online, in select boutiques and via these fundraising partnerships that, along with JDRF, benefit from sales of items created expressly for their causes. Each piece is personally designed and named with heart by Rachel. Jewelry is handmade by Rachel and/or supporters who believe in her cause. Bracelets also include a ?made with love? silver charm.

The Crohn?s & Colitis Foundation announced today that Centocor Ortho Biotech, Lifeway Kiefr, and Shire will participate as official national sponsors of the Foundation?s Take Steps Walk program in 2010. The corporate sponsors are supporting 100 Take Steps Walks this spring and summer in communities around the country. Walkers will raise much-needed dollars for research into Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, chronic, painful, and often debilitating digestive diseases. Collectively known as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), Crohn’s and colitis afflict over 1.4 million American children and adults.

As acknowledgment of their partnership the logos of these companies will appear on Take Steps signs, printed materials, T-shirts, and web sites.

?The Crohn?s & Colitis Foundation is so appreciative for the generous support we are receiving from Centocor Ortho Biotech, Lifeway Kiefr, and Shire in 2010,? said Richard J. The number of people with newly diagnosed IBD has significantly increased in recent years and there is no known cure. The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation has defined the field of IBD research for nearly a half-century, enabling the best scientists to discover better therapies and ultimately, a cure. In the past two years alone, over 75,000 Americans participated in Take Steps, raising over $ 13 million to help the Foundation fund research, education, and support initiatives. Visit http://www.cctakesteps.org today to find a Take Steps walk in your community.

About Crohn’s Disease & Ulcerative Colitis

Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are painful, medically incurable illnesses that attack the digestive system. Crohn’s disease may attack anywhere from the mouth to the anus, while ulcerative colitis inflames only the large intestine (colon). Symptoms may include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever and weight loss. Many patients require hospitalization and surgery. These illnesses can cause severe complications, including colon cancer in patients with long-term disease. Some 1.4 million American adults and children suffer from Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, with as many as 150,000 under the age of 18. Most people develop the diseases between the ages of 15 and 35.

A New Website http://www.NewIntacs.com to Spread Information about Cure of Keratoconus (Intacs & Corneal Cross Linking) Launched by Khanna Vision Institute, Beverly Hills

Beverly HIlls, CA (PRWEB) January 24, 2012

Keratoconus eye disease came to public attention when it was labelled as a contraindication for lasik eye surgery. This also led to increased scrutiny and detection of this degenerative corneal eye disease. The number of people detected with this disease is increasing rapidly. It is of significance to note that this disease starts in the teens and may grow like wildfire leaving the person blind by mid twenties. Simple exams like color corneal topography and pachymetry (measurement of corneal thickness) may detect the disease early.

Unlike laser vision correction the knowledge of latest technologies for cure of keratoconus is limited. NewIntacs.com has been launched with the goal of increasing awareness, helping in early detection, and spreading the word about the latest surgical treatment modalities like Intacs and cxl or Cornea Cross Linking. The site is unique in having a discussion board for keratoconus patients.

Rajesh Khanna, MD is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has specialized training in LASIK, Cataract and Corneal surgery from the University of Cincinnati.

Dr. Khanna is known as the LASIK surgeon to the stars, as he has performed over 10,000 vision correction procedures on many Olympic medal winners and Hollywood personalities like Disney stars Brenda Song and Corbin Bleu, “Hercules” Kevin Sorbo, UFC champion fighter Bas Rutten, and Butch Patrick who played Eddie Munster. He also performs Intacs Surgery for keratoconus.

Khanna is a voluntary member of the UCLA faculty, as well as of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive surgery.

The Khanna Vision Institute has centers in Beverly Hills at 240 S. La Cienega Blvd. #250 and Westlake Village at 179 Auburn Court #1.

Recent Studies and Organizations Spreading Misconceptions About a ?Cure? for Alcohol and Drug Addiction of Concern to The Recovery Place

Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) April 28, 2011

Contrary to allegations from various companies, there is no cure for addiction. This is a fact. The concern for The Recovery Place is the growing popularity that there is a cure–that addiction isn’t a disease permanently affecting the mind and body of an addict. A recent study by Obiter Research claims a drug called Ibogaine can “cure” an addiction to heroin, but regrets to include the direct correlation between the drug and dopamine levels can cause permanent damage and take control of the normal brain function of an addict and needs to be addressed to properly treat addiction. There is the great hope for developing better treatments for alcohol and drug addiction, and this is where most research studies on the causes of addiction place their focus. The Recovery Place drug rehab and alcohol treatment center wants the general public to understand that newer and more effective ways to treat those with addictions are the ultimate outcomes of these studies, and that addiction is a disease without a cure, but through client centered and individualized treatment it is manageable.

What is dopamine and what does it have to do with addiction? Dopamine is a naturally released neurotransmitter within the brain that is important for the sensation of pleasure, desire and euphoria. But dopamine also plays critical and fundamental roles in normal brain function, cardiovascular health, kidney function and many hormones. Disruption to the normal way dopamine is released within the body has been linked to many conditions from Parkinson?s to schizophrenia.

Cocaine, alcohol and prescription drugs, such as Percocet, cause a sudden rush of dopamine being released. This causes the ?high? or sense of euphoria that is felt. Someone taking a narcotic for after-surgery pain views this sensation as a side-effect, and not the primary reason for taking the medication. Recreational users take narcotics to achieve this high for ?fun.? But addicts no longer have a choice: they need more and more of the drug or alcohol to achieve the same high and to avoid painful withdrawal symptoms. Over time, there are actual permanent changes within the brain, including that of the dopamine effect.

Drug addiction and alcoholism isn?t primarily about dopamine?s pleasurable side-effects in the body. Why are some people able to have a glass of wine once or twice a week and never tumble over into alcoholism? Why is someone who needed a narcotic medication to control surgical pain, or someone who used marijuana once or twice, not pulled down into the destructive disease of addiction?

The causes of addiction are complicated, and related to genetic and social factors, in addition to the actual changes in the brain that happen over time when drugs or alcohol are used.

Some people have used drugs or alcohol to control other symptoms, such as anxiety or depression, and this use has led to addiction. Some have experienced trauma or can?t escape a difficult social or family situation except through the temporary high they get using drugs or alcohol. Others have a genetic predisposition to alcoholism. There is no one path to addiction, and no one road to alcoholism.

The Recovery Place feels it is exceedingly important for the general public to understand why addiction is so complicated, and why treatment needs to be fully individualized to the person who is being treated.

About The Recovery Place:

The Recovery Place alcohol and drug addiction treatment program is concerned not only with active treatment and recovery, but also ongoing prevention and education services to the national community.

Each specialized treatment track at The Recovery Place is individualized and client-centered.

Attorney Thomas Henson Leads Charge to Grow North Carolina Tour de Cure

Raleigh, North Carolina (PRWEB) May 08, 2012

For the third year in a row, local attorney Thomas Henson Jr. is serving as chair of the American Diabetes Association?s North Carolina Tour de Cure, which will take place from June 2 and 3 in Cary, North Carolina.

?The biggest challenge as chair of the Tour is growing the event to the proportion it deserves,? said Henson, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 9. ?I want our community to understand the importance of this event. The Tour helps combat diabetes by raising funds to find a cure for the disease, providing education to those living with diabetes, and teaching ways to prevent and treat for diabetes. I?m not just doing the Tour de Cure for myself. I?m doing this for everyone who has been affected by diabetes. Together, we will find a cure.?

Henson says he?s anticipating about 700 participants in the Tour this year, up from 525 cyclists last year.

?Thomas?s leadership and professionalism are key to the success of our event and the committee he leads,? said Katie-Rose Darby, an associate manager of the American Diabetes Association. ?He puts his words into action, and we?re inspired to surpass our goals.?

Henson, who rides his bike between 70 and 100 miles per week, says the hardest part about riding in the Tour is managing his blood sugar levels and insulin regulation during the six-hour athletic endeavor.

In addition to chairing the Tour, Henson will be leading the HensonFuerst Cycling Team in the event. The team has raised more than $ 70,000 during the last four Tours and has been named one of the national Tour de Cure Top 100 Fundraisers for the past two years. This year, the team members are setting the bar high and working hard to keep their fundraising title for a third year in a row.

The HensonFuerst Cycling Team currently has 40 members riding in the Tour and is looking for more people to join. Anyone interested in joining the HensonFuerst Cycling Team can contact Henson at ThomasHenson(at)lawmed(dot)com for more information.

There also are volunteer opportunities available for the Tour. Contact Katie-Rose Darby for more information at kdarby(at)diabetes(dot)org.

About the American Diabetes Association?s Tour de Cure

The HensonFuerst Health Initiative

The Tour de Cure is one of many projects and events to which the members of HensonFuerst devote their time. To recognize the importance of giving back to the community, the personal injury law firm established the HensonFuerst Health Initiative, a comprehensive plan that encompasses all of the law firm?s community and service efforts. The initiative encourages both community and firm members to prevent injuries, improve health and fitness, and aid organizations committed to bettering health and well-being.
