Bel Marra Health Supports Recent Research That Shows How Eating Dessert Could be Beneficial to Weight Loss Endeavors

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) July 11, 2012

Bel Marra Health supports recent research that outlines how eating dessert could be beneficial to weight loss endeavors.

The breakfast research conducted by Tel Aviv University?s Wolfson Medical Center, monitored 200 non-diabetic obese adults. The participants were split into two groups; those who consumed dessert breakfast and those who ate a low carbohydrate breakfast. After four months people in both categories lost an average 30 to 33 pounds each. In the following four months it was a different picture. The low carb group gained about 22 pounds each while the breakfast dessert group lost an average of 15 pounds each. Throughout the rest of the day, the breakfast dessert group reported that they did not have hunger pains or crave food; they felt satisfied and were less likely to snack or seek big meals.

While food experts say the study does have some scientific merit, nutritional researchers at New York University are somewhat skeptical. They say they find that some desserts can actually trigger food cravings in people. They argue in certain cases if a person has one dessert, they want another one.

Nutritionists and dieticians say you still want to steer away from trans-fats like doughnuts, cakes, and cookies. Incorporate fruits and grains with a sweet flavor into your meals. CEO of Bel Marra Health Jim Chiang says, ?This approach will go a long way in reducing your risk of obesity.?

Previous medical research has shown that indulging in higher calorie meals is better in the morning than later in the day. The reason? earlier in the day the body?s metabolism is more active and able to work off the extra calories. Doctors say that breakfast is the meal that also regulates ghrelin. This is the hormone that increases hunger. Ghrelin rises before every meal, but is suppressed most at breakfast time. Scientists suggest that if you skip breakfast or have a low calorie breakfast, there will be an increase of ghrelin released from the stomach into the blood leading to cravings for high calorie foods throughout the day.

Spokesperson for Bel Marra Health Dr. Victor Marchione says, ?It is hard for many of us to imagine breakfast desserts being part of a good health plan, especially when we have been told for so many years to replace sweet treats with lots of fruits. However, many physicians who have had an opportunity to review the latest evidence say breakfast desserts do make sense; that there is a place for every kind of food as long as quantities are closely monitored.?

Stop Reading Menu Card & Start Eating ? says His Holiness Paramahamsa Nithyananda

(PRWEB) July 09, 2012

July 5th 2012, Inner Awakening Program- Day 4, India: His Holiness Paramahamsa Nithyananda said, ?Just reading the Sanskrit verses and translations in the Bhagavad Gita is one of my entertainments. It is a not a philosophical book, it is a very powerful entertainment.

His Holiness Paramahamsa Nithyananda translated the verse 16 in the Bhagavad Gita Chapter 5 as: ‘Whose ignorance is destroyed by the knowledge, their knowledge, like the rising sun, throws light on the supreme consciousness.’

He said, “you don?t need to gain knowledge. You don?t need to gain enlightenment. It is there like a sun shining within you. All you need to do is work on removing the ignorance. This one small understanding shifts the way you put your efforts. Many traditions have enormous amount of literatures and have the attitude of gaining more and more knowledge. They lost the enlightenment experience.

The attitude with which you start the journey will play a major role in the success of your journey. You need to read, not to gain knowledge, but to dispel the ignorance. You are the sun covered by clouds, cloud has to be dispersed and the sun will shine again. I will call only this as the right knowledge towards enlightenment.

Just reading the books and information is one of the worst addictions which can keep enlightenment experience away from you. It is worse than addiction to drugs and alcohol, because the whole world is against these substance addictions and at one point will help you get out of it. But the whole world supports reading books and gaining knowledge. Only an enlightened Master?s initiation can help you shift towards experiencing the truth.

Satsanga, being with the Truths, Master and Mission in a unclutched way ( Buddha, Dhamma & Sangha) is the ultimate way, to experience the truth.?

On the 4th day of the 21 Day Inner Awakening Retreat, Paramahamsa Nithyananda answered the questions of participants during the morning world wide discourse. In response to a question on why perfectly logical highly educated people drop their logic and follow Him, he said, ?Blessed are those who have even seen in their lives, something beyond the bandwidth of their logic and senses. They are not dropping their logic, they are understanding and upgrading the bandwidth of their logic. Their ordinary logic is taking a quantum jump.

Spiritual seekers and disciples understand that extraordinary experiences cannot be explained by conditional logic, and the conditional logic does not have enough bandwidth to capture what is happening. Then the third eye which is beyond logic opens up.

If one has never trusted in their life that impossible is possible, then they die as depressed beings. Atheist is a person who is very clear that impossible is impossible. Theist is a person who believes possible is possible. Disciple is a person who has got a glimpse of the possibility of impossibility. Master is a person radiating impossibility in every possible way.

I am not a orator. I am only an authentic expresser.?

Remuda Programs for Eating Disorders Launches New Anxiety Disorders Program for Teens and Children

Phoenix, Ariz. (PRWEB) March 7, 2008

Remuda Programs for Eating Disorders, the nation’s leading and largest inpatient treatment center for women and girls suffering from eating disorders, has launched a new treatment program for anxiety disorders. The inpatient program will treat adolescents and children suffering from: obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD); panic disorder; specific phobia; social anxiety disorder; separation anxiety disorder; generalized anxiety disorder; anxiety disorder NOS (not otherwise specified); and OCD spectrum disorders, such as body dysmorphic disorder or trichotillomania.

“Four to five million children and adolescents struggle with anxiety disorders,” said Amy Spahr, Executive Clinical Director, at Remuda Programs for Eating Disorders. “We have been extremely successful in helping thousands of girls and women overcome eating disorders for almost 18 years. During this time, thousands of our young patients have entered treatment with an anxiety disorder and we’ve had great success in treating those issues as well.”

The minimum stay is 60 days for Remuda’s Anxiety Disorders Program. This time in treatment is needed to stop negative behaviors, address critical issues and help patients and their families. All therapies occur within a cognitive behavioral framework, are based on Biblical Christianity and include:

Exposure with response prevention therapy
Didactic presentations
Skills groups
Equine and canine therapy
Art therapy
Challenge course and recreation groups
Movement and relaxation therapy
Daily chapels, providing non-denominational Biblical teachings
Spiritual growth groups

Parents are encouraged to meet their daughter’s treatment team at admission. This helps Remuda’s professionals gain understanding of family issues and possible familial background of the disorder. During the patient’s stay, parents participate in weekly therapeutic telephone sessions with their daughter and her therapist. Half-way through treatment, the entire family meets at Remuda for two to three days of education, process groups and counseling.

Remuda’s programs and ranch settings are different from the traditional, institutional format offered at hospitals and clinics. Remuda’s programs offer a balanced, multi-disciplinary team approach that is designed to treat the whole person and meet her unique medical, nutritional, psychological, and spiritual needs.

“We look forward to offering our anxiety disorders program to teens and girls who are in need of inpatient treatment,” adds Spahr. “Remuda has long practiced treating the individual biologically, psychologically, socially and spiritually. We bring to this program years of success and specific treatment tailored to each individual.”

Wellness & Prevention Inc. Study Finds Binge Eating Significantly Impacts Employee Work Productivity

Ann Arbor, Mich. (PRWEB) June 06, 2012

Wellness & Prevention, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company, announced that a study published in the April issue in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found significant associations between binge eating and work productivity impairment. Binge eating, defined as overeating combined with a sense of loss of control, is a major contributor to obesity. Based on the study data, researchers estimated, for a company of 1,000 employees, an annual productivity loss of $ 107,965.00 due to binge eating. The results demonstrate that efforts to reduce productivity impairment should target binge eating as a modifiable risk behavior.

The study, conducted by Wellness & Prevention, Inc., evaluated HealthMedia? Succeed? Health Risk Assessment (HRA) responses of 46,818 adult employees. Health care plans and employers deployed the HRA questionnaires to their employees as part of their population health offerings and/or health benefit structure.

While binge eating remains an underreported health risk behavior ? possibly due to the stigma associated with overeating ? many studies indicate that individuals may be more likely to disclose this type of behavior in a computer-based health risk assessment than in a face-to-face or written assessment.

Researchers found that 9.4 percent of the employees in the study reported binge eating. Frequent binge eating was the third highest health risk associated with excess productivity impairment, while depression and stress were the top two associated risks. Additionally, the findings showed that binge eating was significantly more common among obese employees (17.8 percent) than among non-obese employees (5.5 percent).

An increasingly obese workforce has many cost implications for employers, including the indirect costs that result from decreased employee work productivity, as well as the direct costs from increased utilization of health care services by employees. The health implications for obese individuals are numerous as well: increased potential for chronic illness, disability, elevated health care costs, decreased earning potential, shortened life expectancy, and a diminished quality of life.

“These findings suggest that efforts to improve the health, productivity, and performance of employee populations should include routine screenings and interventions for binge eating behavior,” said Richard Bedrosian, Ph.D., Director of Behavioral Health and Solution Development at Wellness & Prevention, Inc. “The inclusion of questions about binge eating in HRAs can be a valuable tool for identifying individuals who binge eat, and who may not otherwise seek help for this health risk behavior.”

About Wellness & Prevention, Inc.

Wellness & Prevention, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company, helps organizations renew the health, energy, and performance of their employees and members, and offers an integrated portfolio of solutions to cover the full spectrum of population health ? from wellness and prevention, to behavioral health, to chronic disease support. New Program Fosters Healthy Eating Habits and Combats Childhood Obesity

(PRWEB) January 5, 2006

With the rise in childhood obesity and the increased risk of many obesity-related health problems, The Lifestyle Journey Program promotes healthy eating and lifestyle habits. This program empowers kids and families to create long-term healthy habits; it is not simply another weight loss program geared towards individuals who are overweight. All families can benefit from The Lifestyle Journey Program.

The recent release of the report ?What We Eat in America,? (an integrated report combining surveys conducted by both the USDA and the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services) shows that almost a third of Americans get too little Vitamin C, almost half get too little Vitamin A, more than half get too little magnesium and 92-97 percent get too little fiber and potassium. These particular nutrients are important because they help lower the risk of major health diseases such as cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes, which are also related to obesity. Studies also reveal that the average 13- to 18-year-old male drinks two cans of soda a day (the equivalent of 70 pounds of sugar a year) and that on average, teens and children consume fast food three to four times a week, which could lead to childhood obesity and a weight gain of as much as 12 pounds per year. It is possible that today?s generation of young people may not out-live their parents, as a result of obesity and the early onset of diseases such as cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.

?Based on reports such as What We Eat in America and with statistics showing how many people are overweight or obese, we felt there was a need to reach out to families within their own homes to help them foster healthy eating habits and positive long-term lifestyle choices,? states Steve Coons, one of the co-Creators of The Lifestyle Journey Program.?

The Lifestyle Journey Program has been used in both U.S. and Canadian schools, with over 15,000 students using the program this year. The program is dietitian-reviewed and physician-endorsed.

Kevin Murdoch, the program?s other co-Creator states, ?In schools that have used the program, there has been such great feedback; however, by creating this home-based version of the program, we can support even more families to lead a healthy lifestyle and all the benefits it has to offer.?

Students that have used the program have reported higher intakes of calcium-rich foods, fruits and vegetables, whole grain foods, healthier snacks as well as increased levels of physical activity. Parents also report noticeable changes in their son or daughter?s daily food choices.

About The Lifestyle Journey Program:

Building on the widespread use of the program in schools throughout the U.S. and Canada, young people are empowered to develop their own Healthy Living Plan. Participants track their daily food and activity choices and use hands-on tools to develop healthy eating habits. Participants also have opportunities to participate in coaching sessions and receive ongoing support as they work through the 5 phases of the program. The Lifestyle Journey Program helps discourage childhood obesity through activities that encourage healthy eating and positive lifestyle choices.

The Victorian Eating Disorder Center Implements Neurofeedback Into Their Treatment Model

Newport Beach, CA (PRWEB) November 15, 2011

The Victorian of Newport Beach is the premier women?s treatment center for eating disorders and co-existing addiction. The Victorian is now using neurofeedback, which is an emerging form of treatment for addiction, depression, anxiety and other disorders. Neurofeedback helps women focus on the daily challenges of recovery.

Neurofeedback therapy, also known as EEG Biofeedback, addresses a variety of neurological and brain disorders by allowing patients to learn how to alter their own brain waves through practice and repetition. The treatment team at The Victorian has added neurofeedback to the variety of treatment modalities they use to create individualized treatment programs for patients.

Women who have participated in neurofeedback treatment at The Victorian have had a positive response, with reported benefits including better stress management, reduced anxiety, improved sleep, and increased concentration.

Victorian patients meet with Neurofeedback specialist Andrea Brokaw for therapy sessions 2 to 3 times per week. During these sessions, the patient interacts with images on a computer screen using her brain waves. The process is pleasant and challenging, with elements that resemble a computer game. After several sessions the patient?s focus and concentration will improve and she will gain self-control over certain brain activity patterns. The goal of the Neurofeedback therapy is to transfer this acquired brain-control skill into daily life.

According to Michelle Smith, Program Director at The Victorian and founder of the facility’s Neurofeedback Program, “We have found the Neurofeedback process to actually have a very calming effect on everyone in treatment at our facility. The difference is noticeable in how much more peaceful and less anxious the center is since the sessions have begun.”

One patient who successfully completed treatment provided this feedback, “Prior to receiving neurofeedback, I always had lots of anxiety and tried different pharmaceutical drugs to help me feel balanced. I was tired of using drugs to make myself feel better. Neurofeedback allowed me to teach myself how to control my anxiety levels and calm myself down. It made me feel more connected to myself and helped with my anxiety. I use what I learned in the sessions in my daily life and no longer need pharmaceutical drugs for anxiety.”

“Patients report feeling more calm and balanced after Neurofeedback,” reports Michelle Smith. “Many say that they feel less anxious when faced with problem situations and have experienced greater creativity in their problem-solving abilities.”

The Victorian of Newport Beach is a world-renowned residential treatment center for eating disorders that also addresses co-existing substance abuse issues. The Victorian’s unique residential program is conducted in a beautiful Victorian-style home located just steps from the ocean. Women who are struggling with anorexia, bulimia, compulsive eating, binge eating as well as substance abuse and other co-occurring disorders are provided with a safe and respectful environment where they can begin their journey of transformation. The Victorian’s caring staff, which includes some of the best clinical experts in the field, provides 24 hour a day treatment and support. An individualized treatment plan is created for each patient from a wide range of therapeutic programs that include psychiatric care, monitored meals, group meetings, individual and family therapy, meditation, art therapy and mind-body activities such as yoga.

The Victorian of Newport Beach is part of the family of Sober Living By The Sea treatment centers, one of the largest residential substance abuse treatment programs in the U.S. The Victorian is also a member of CRC Health Group, the nation’s largest provider of specialized healthcare services. Each day, CRC Health Group provides treatment for more than 30,000 people who are struggling with alcohol and drug addiction, eating disorders, and other behavioral issues. CRC Health Group’s first priority is helping people get well and stay well by providing leading-edge scientific solutions for behavioral health issues.

Eating Disorders : How Can You Tell?

Onset of anorexia is usually, but not always, under the age of 20. Anorexia typically begins with the young girl trying to lose weight. This gradually develops into an obsession with dieting, losing weight and food. It is not a condition involving the loss of appetite, rather a serious perception disorder. It is believed the condition affects approximately one in every hundred girls aged between 16 and 18, with a total of between 60,000 to 200,000 people suffering from the condition. It does not however, affect only girls; there are a large number of men also suffering with the condition.

Anorexia causes people to see themselves in a distorted way. They regard themselves as overweight and needing to lose extreme amounts of weight. It is through this that they become obsessive about food and develop unusual eating rituals. They are often very secretive about food. The condition is often diagnosed along with depression, anxiety disorder, personality disorder, or substance abuse disorder. They may check their weight more than once a day and carry out intense exercise regimes.

Bulimia is closely linked to anorexia, and shares many of its essential features. People with the condition may think about food constantly and experience extremely strong cravings. After a binge they may induce vomiting or use laxatives as a method of avoiding weight gain. Someone suffering from bulimia is usually aware of the abnormal eating pattern and there are feelings of guilt and self-loathing after vomiting. They typically fear that they will not be able to stop eating voluntarily. Frequently vomiting can cause a vast number of side effects, such as tooth decay, mouth ulcers, heart problems and muscular weakness. The use of laxatives on a regular basis can also cause serious damage, and does not actually assist in weight loss. This is because calories are absorbed in the upper bowel, whereas laxatives work mainly by removing the fluid in the lower bowel. Bulimia can be an easier condition for the sufferer to hide compared to anorexia, as people with the condition do not always lose weight.

]]>

Binge eating disorder is regarded as the most common eating disorder, affecting around 2% of adults, yet it is less well known than anorexia and bulimia. The disorder is characterised by the person eating large quantities of food, but unlike bulimia they do not use laxatives or vomit afterwards. It is due to this that they are likely to gain weight. People with the disorder feel they are unable to control what they are doing.

Binge eating disorder has a number of characteristics, which include the sufferer eating secretly where there is no-one else around, eating quicker than usual, and eating even when they are full. They may also eat foods which are regarded as ‘naughty’ but they do not feel as though they can control their habit. People with binge eating disorder tend to be overweight due to the nature of the disorder, although people of a normal healthy weight can also be affected. Although binge eating is usually followed by feelings of guilt and shame, sufferers often turn to food as a source of comfort when they are feeling sad or simply bored. Due to the feelings of guilt and shame, many sufferers to not seek professional help as it would
