College Students Promote Mental Health Awareness During National Stress Out Day

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) April 15, 2011

OCD Chicago has joined Active Minds and Anxiety Disorders Association of America to sponsor National Stress Out Day, a nationwide effort to provide pre-finals stress relief and educate college students about the difference between everyday anxiety and an anxiety disorder or other mental illness. One hundred thirty campuses in 37 states will participate.

The event will be held during the week of April 17-23. Students will engage in activities aimed to relieve pre-finals stress while reducing the stigma around mental health disorders which can prevent students from seeking treatment.

?OCD, an anxiety disorder, can be extremely debilitating, and it is crucial that those suffering reach out for help as early as possible,? said OCD Chicago Executive Director Ellen Sawyer. ?That is why we are proud to help educate college students about mental health issues, and let them know that there is a place to go for help and information.?

Anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental health problems on college campuses. Forty million U.S. adults suffer from an anxiety disorder, and 75 percent of them experience their first episode of anxiety by age 22.

National Stress Out Day is even more important in light of a recent national survey by the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA that found first-year college students’ self-ratings of their emotional health dropped to record low levels in 2010. According to a 2009 survey by the American College Health Association forty-six percent of college students said they felt ?things were hopeless? at least once in the previous 12 months, and nearly a third had been so depressed that it was difficult to function.

OCD Chicago is a not-for-profit organization that works to increase public and professional awareness of OCD, educate and support people with OCD and their families, and to encourage research into new treatments and a cure. The organization provides numerous resources such as educational materials, treatment referrals, information for parents and teachers, and a place for those affected by OCD to find hope and encouragement.

OCD is a neurobiological disorder characterized by obsessions and compulsions that take up an excessive amount of time (typically an hour or more each day), cause significant distress and significantly interfere with normal life. Obsessions are uncontrollable, persistent worries, doubts, or fears, and compulsions are the repetitive activities that the person with OCD feels compelled to engage in to relieve the anxiety caused by the obsessions.

For more information on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD Chicago, please visit http://www.ocdchicago.org. On its web site, the organization offers detailed facts about OCD, resources, personal stories from teens and students with OCD and guides such as Overcoming OCD: A Guide for College Students. You can also call OCD Chicago at 773-880-1635 to speak to someone knowledgeable about OCD.

WellBalance Announces Addition of Chief Medical Officer to Scientifically Based Weight Loss Camps and Health Programs

Asheville, NC (PRWEB) May 09, 2012

WellBalance fitness and weight loss camps recently announced the addition of Gary Curran, MD, as Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Curran has successfully started and operated a family practice where emphasis has been paid to helping families instill healthier habits. In his role as Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Curran will advise on the medical data collection from weight loss campers, assist with data analysis, consult on specific camper conditions, and provide insight on WellBalance’s fitness and weight loss approach

?Dr. Curran has an exceptional academic pedigree matched with in-depth professional experience helping adolescents and adults make healthier food and activity choices,? commented John Gordon, CEO of WellBalance, ?We didn?t want a researcher without any practical knowledge about the obstacles families face in making fitness and weight loss choices.?

Dr. Curran advised and volunteered for many years at innovative diabetes-focused Camp Coqui and has special training in Wilderness Medicine. He received his medical degree from University of Michigan, a Top 5 medical school rated by U.S. News & World Report, and his undergraduate degree from University of Virginia.

?In my practice I see the scope and effects of obesity every day. It?s tragic, because by the time they graduate high school, children have already developed the diseases associated with obesity,? continued Chief Medical Officer Dr. Curran, ?There?s a very strong family component, including genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors. Most families have no idea where to begin because there are so many things that need to change.”

Dr. Curran?s experience in his practice as well as his volunteer work with Camp Coqui demonstrated the efficacy of comprehensive intervention programs like WellBalance weight loss camps.

?It?s nearly impossible to change lifestyle factors with a child in their normal family setting,? observed Dr. Curran, ?WellBalance not only creates the opportunity for kids to totally change their environment and behavior, but it also works with families to teach them how to support their child?s efforts and success in weight loss and weight management.?

Dr. Curran is a noted and accomplished competitive runner who has won many local and regional races and is an avid hiker and climber as well. He is married with two children and lives in Ashevile, North Carolina.

Bel Marra Health Comments on a Recent Study that Shows Women with Heart Disease are More Likely to have Baby Girls

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) May 05, 2012

Bel Marra Health, well known for offering high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional supplements, has commented on a recent study that shows the connection between women with heart disease and the likelihood of having a baby girl.

Researchers at the World Congress of Cardiology reviewed the gender of 216 babies who were born to women who had been diagnosed with a cardiovascular disorder such as heart disease. They found that 75% of the babies born to these women were female. Amongst these women, 64% were suffering with valvular disease, 19% with dilated cardiomyopathy and 14% with uncorrected or significant residual congenital heart disease.

Dr. A. Alizadehasl, from Tabriz University, Tabriz, Iran, reports ?We believe that this is the first study looking at the relationship between gender and the mother?s cardiac disease.?

?This is a very interesting observation. The chromosomes in a man?s sperm are responsible for the sex of a baby but this study does suggest that there may be a relationship between the health status of the mother and the sex of the babies that she is able to carry to full-term,? adds Dr. Kathryn Taubert, Chief Science Officer, World Heart Federation.

Spokesperson for Bel Marra Health, Dr. Victor Marchione says, ?although many women may desire a baby girl, it is probably safe to say that none of them would sacrifice their good health in order to increase their odds of having one. Proper cardiac care and good health are vitally important for a healthy pregnancy and the delivery of a healthy baby.?

In addition to exercising and eating a whole food based diet, you can reduce your risk for cardiac disease by quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake and maintaining a healthy weight. Finally, you can magnify the effects of this cardiac care lifestyle by emphasizing the following heart-supporting super foods ? berries, cold-water fish, oatmeal, spinach and olive oil.

WellBalance Weight Loss Camp for Kids & Teens Promotes National Children?s Mental Health Awareness Week

Asheville, NC (PRWEB) May 08, 2012

WellBalance, a leading adolescent and adult health & wellness organization that operates fitness, health, and weight loss camps for kids and teens aged 10-20 is supporting the 2012 National Children?s Mental Health Awareness Week. An event organized by the National Federation of Families for Children?s Mental Health, National Children?s Mental Health Awareness Week emphasizes youth overcoming trauma.

In observance of this week-long event, WellBalance fitness and weight loss camps are modifying the Motivation chapters of the ME Plan, the scientifically-based Motivate & Educate program that weight loss campers and alumni use to develop lifelong habits that are needed for healthy living. WellBalance will expand on the behavioral curriculum in the ME Plan to help weight loss campers overcome barriers to healthy living, while also developing coping strategies that will lead to a higher degree of wellness.

?Children’s mental health week is a very important week for stigmatized obese children and teens,? said Dr. Eli Puterman, researcher in behavioral medicine in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California at San Francisco, and a member of the WellBalance Scientific Advisory Board. ?There’s a large body of research that says that obese children and adolescents are at greater risk for low self esteem, which then places them at increased risk of future depression, anxiety, more disordered eating, and other mental health problems as they mature through their teens and adults. Breaking this cycle of obesity, self esteem and mental health is important to have today’s children free from mental and physical health problems.?

The National Federation of Families for Children?s Mental Health began National Children?s Mental Health Awareness Week was created by The National Federation of Families for Children?s Mental Health to raise awareness and to highlight children?s mental health issues.

?While the intentions of Michelle Obama?s Lets Move! Campaign are good, there is notable percentage of adolescents whose obesity is merely a symptom of a more profound underlying ailment,? commented John Gordon, CEO, ?WellBalance?s health coaching curriculum is continually refined in order to identify mental health barriers that prevent adolescents from making healthier diet and activity choices and provide new strategies for improved health.?

The National Federation of Families for Children?s Mental Health invites all participating organizations to use the 2012 event to encourage positive mental health, wellness, and social development for children and teens. The National Federation of Families for Children?s Mental Health has provided the following guidelines to successfully implement a comprehensive wellness program that meet the goals of this year?s theme:

Emphasis how mental health is essential to overall wellness
Teach families that profound emotional and mental health ailments in youth are real and can be treated.
Provide information to families with children that develop mental health challenges about services and support systems that are family guided, child driven, and culturally sensitive
Promote the values of dignity, social inclusion, and acceptance to children and families.
Publicize to families and youth that their voice is needed when determining appropriate services and interventions.

Connecticut Children’s Medical Center Awarded $10.5 Million Grant From National Institutes of Health for First of Kind Study

Hartford, Conn. (PRWEB) May 09, 2012

Connecticut Children?s Medical Center has been awarded a $ 10.5 million dollar grant from the National Institutes of Health for a 5-year study of the effects of standardized therapy for children with ulcerative colitis. Despite the increasing incidence of this disease, there has never been a large scale study to determine how children respond to therapy.

The study team, headed by Jeffrey Hyams, MD, Director of the Division of Digestive Diseases, Hepatology and Nutrition at Connecticut Children?s and Professor of Pediatrics at UConn, and Lee ?Ted? Denson from Cincinnati Children?s Hospital and Medical Center, has enlisted 25 leading pediatric institutions throughout the United States and Canada to participate in the study. Enrollment, which will focus on children between 4 and 17 years of age who are newly diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, is expected to begin this July. Participants will be followed for up to 5 years to monitor disease status. The University of North Carolina Clinical Studies Coordinating Center will serve as the data coordinating center.

?This study will be the first of its kind in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease that will allow us to develop a better understanding of why there is such variability in the response of children treated with standard therapies,? explained Dr. Hyams. ?By studying genetic, immunologic, and microbiologic aspects of the disease at diagnosis and through its course we hope to be able to design more successful therapies for children with ulcerative colitis.?

The grant is the first and largest multi-center pediatric clinical study that Connecticut Children?s has received from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health. ?This is a remarkable accomplishment for Dr. Hyams and a major achievement for Connecticut Children?s,? said Dr. Dr. Paul Dworkin, Physician in Chief at Connecticut Children’s and Chair of Pediatrics at the UConn School of Medicine.

The Center for Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Diseases at Connecticut Children?s Medical Center is the largest of its kind between Boston and New York, currently caring for almost 600 children with either ulcerative colitis or Crohns disease. The Center has pioneered the use of emerging therapies in children with these disorders and engages in basic research investigating the effects of disease and therapy on bone health and growth as well as helping to clarify the mechanisms by which these diseases occur. The Center is also the home of the Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Collaborative Research Group Registry which is studying the natural history of newly diagnosed disease since 2002 in over 1800 children at 30 leading pediatric centers in North America.

About Connecticut Children?s Medical Center

Connecticut Children?s Medical Center, the region?s only academic medical center dedicated exclusively to the care of children, is committed to improving children?s physical and emotional health through family-centered care, research, education and advocacy. Fox & Friends Features TrekDesk Treadmill Desk As An Innovation That Enhances Health

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 07, 2012

Fox & Friends, the top rated national morning news program, has an eye for spotting emerging trends in America. This past week in a piece titled ?Standing More Prolongs Your Life? host Gretchen Carlson, along with legal analyst Arthur Aidala, introduced the nation to a health innovation with the potential to change the obesity epidemic and health landscape in America: the TrekDesk Treadmill Desk.

Honing in on one of the major challenges at the heart of America?s obesity epidemic and current health crisis Gretchen jumped right onto her Spirit Fitness treadmill and TrekDesk asking ?what are the negatives of sitting at a desk all day??

?There are inherent health risks that are leading us to the chronic illnesses that we have in this country?, stated Steve Bordley, CEO of TrekDesk Treadmill Desks. ?We have 70% of our population that is overweight, half of that number is obese. We are looking at it as a dietary problem when actually it is an inactivity problem.?

While the Surgeon General advocates 10,000 steps a day for minimum health maintenance, the average American walks less than half of that leading to a range of inactivity related diseases including heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes.

Associate producer AJ Hall comically illustrated the difference between slow continual movement during the day and a strenuous cardio workout by running on his TrekDesk equipped with one of the three ?office quiet? Spirit Fitness treadmills. ?I am running at 6.1 mph here, he related gasping for breath.

?Is it recommended that people run at work?? Gretchen asked while ramping up the speed of her TrekDesk to compete with AJ.

?No, but actually you will have more energy at the end of the day walking slowly that will make you want to do your running and do your cardio. But there is a distinction between exercise and movement,? Bordley answered.

This distinction was illustrated deftly by legal analyst Arthur Aidala methodically walking while working in the Green Room during the segment. ?Steve told me you can do this for eight hours a day so you are NOT going to be running like AJ for eight hours. But at the pace that Steve put me on, I have to be honest with you, I have been doing this for 37 minutes I have burned 70 calories, and after about 10 minutes you forget that you are moving. I mean I have read the paper, I wrote things, I was on the computer, I can make a call, I played with the Blackberry. I gotta tell you, it?s pretty cool!?

?The Fox cast and crew were a lot of fun and great to work with and I really liked their creative way to visually show that exercising at work does not involve sweating, straining and running by showing the contrasts side by side, rather it involves a slow methodical pace throughout the day. We were especially grateful that Gretchen called attention to the W3 initiative that assists WinetoWater.org in its quest to bring clean water to impoverished corners of the earth. Three children perish every single minute worldwide due to waterborne diseases, which is more than AIDS and malaria combined. The steps we take in America to improve our health can also help them immensely,? stated Bordley.

University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children?s Hospital Receives $12.7 million Health Care Innovation Award from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation

Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) May 08, 2012

University Hospitals Case Medical Center?s Rainbow Babies & Children?s Hospital (UH Rainbow) will receive $ 12.7 million of $ 122.6 million awarded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) this week for sustainable plans to improve care, lower costs and improve the overall health and wellness of children. UH Rainbow is among 26 other preliminary awardees announced today to receive a federal Health Care Innovation Award from more than 3,000 applicants nationwide.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) opened a grant competition late December of 2011 for ideas that can deliver quick benefits to the Medicare and Medicaid program in terms of cost savings and higher-quality care. The competition called the Health Care Innovation Award, funded by the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, will provide three-year grants of $ 1 million to $ 30 million to health care providers, payers, local government entities, and public-private partnerships, including collaborative efforts among multiple payers.

UH Rainbow submitted a proposal to deliver CMMI?s three goals — better health, improved care, and lower costs — through the implementation of a multidisciplinary workforce that the children?s hospital calls the Physician Extension Team (PET). The PET model is designed to create collaborations with primary care providers, hospitals and managed care and health educators in order to provide children with the highest quality of care at significantly reduced costs to the health care system.

?We are changing the health care delivery system for all pediatric patients and improving child health overall,? said Leona Cuttler, MD, UH Rainbow?s Director of the Center for Child Health and Policy, Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism and Professor of Pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. ?Our goal with the PET model is develop a sustainable coordinated system that improves the quality of outpatient care for children, increases their access to physicians, improves pediatric behavioral health services, decreases unnecessary emergency visits and hospitalizations and advances the health and functionality of children with complex chronic conditions.?

UH Rainbow?s PET model will target over 68,000 children with Medicaid insurance as well as include children with other insurance in several counties across northeastern Ohio.

The PET Model includes three core programs:

– Practice-tailored Facilitation: Health care professionals will provide customized education, training, and enrollment in quality improvement initiatives to primary care offices. PET will collaborate with primary care physicians to improve access.

–Telehealth: The PET program will provide 24/7 access to nurses and physicians who provide advice, referrals, and care coordination through an extensive system of telephone triage, community-based telehealth facilities and instant alert devices that connect homes to on-call personnel.

–Support Services: Multidisciplinary teams including health care professional advocates will assist primary care physicians in providing their patients with medical evaluations and home-based assessments, mental health support as well as align social services.

?We believe this new model will provide better health care at a more appropriate level,? said Andrew Hertz, MD, Medical Director for the UH Rainbow Care Network and Assistant Clinical Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. ?The PET model represents an innovative way to deliver integrated care and we believe it can be easily replicated nationally with high impact savings to the Medicaid and other insurance systems,? added Dr. Hertz ?All children receive a greater level of care and their primary care physician maintains overarching care coordination.?

The PET model will be implemented in stages during the course of six months. More than 50 health professionals will be either hired or trained to implement the PET model.

The preliminary awardees announced today expect to reduce health spending by $ 254 million over the next three years.

?We can?t wait to support innovative projects that will save money and make our health care system stronger,? said Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. ?It?s yet another way we are supporting local communities now in their efforts to provide better care and lower cost.?

Preliminary awardees were chosen not only for their innovative solutions to the health care challenges facing their communities, but also for their focus on creating a well-trained health care workforce that is equipped to meet the need for new jobs in the 21st century health system.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the health care and social assistance sector will gain the most jobs between now and 2020.

The Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program to Offer Free Cardiovascular Screenings in Stockton, California Barbershops

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) May 03, 2012

The City of Stockton, California has joined the Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program (BBHOP) to conduct diabetes and high blood pressure screenings on Saturday, May 12th, 2012, from 11am to 4pm.

Participating barbershops will provide the platform for volunteers to educate, screen and refer African American patrons; encouraging them to become more aware of cardiovascular diseases and how to prevent them.

Daniel Salas, a Pharmacy student at the University of the Pacific is working extensively to get the word out about the program. He along with members of the Phi Delta Chi, Professional Pharmacy Fraternity will administer screenings to hundreds of men in the area.

The Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program has a unique, grassroots approach to health screening and education. Led by Dr. Bill J. Releford, D.P.M., founder of The Diabetic Amputation Prevention (DAP) Foundation, his leadership has taken the Black Barbershop initiative across the country to impact the lives of African American men, helping them to better understand the health issues that plague their community.

“The need to address health care disparities in African American men is paramount in light of the fact that they have the lowest life expectancy of any group in the U.S.,” said Dr. Releford a podiatric surgeon. “For decades, the black barbershop has served as a centralized gathering place where African American men feel comfortable discussing the most important issues that impact their lives: politics, social trends, family and finances. Now, we are introducing an important discussion of health and the critical need for health awareness.”

Recent figures show African American men are 30% more likely to die from heart disease than White men, according to the Office of Minority Health – an arm of Health and Human Services, a federal agency. Also, African American men suffer from prostrate cancer at a level that?s more than twice the mortality rate for any other racial or ethnic group in the U.S., according to the CDC.????

Through black-owned barbershops, which represent a cultural institution of familiarity and trust, the outreach program has adopted a novel means to spread health information. Over 30,000 African American men have been screened in 23 cities, including New Orleans, Chicago, Atlanta, St. Louis, Washington, DC, Baltimore and California since 2007 when the outreach program was launched. The ultimate goal by 2014 is to screen more than a half-million African American men.

State-wide partners of the BBHOP include Anthem Blue Cross and Medtronics. Both are leaders in the health care industry with Anthem providing affordable health care coverage in the state of California and Medtronics serving as the go-to resource for medical technology development. The outreach program is also happy to have the support of community and media partners which include: University of the Pacific, Phi Delta Chi-Professional Pharmacy Fraternity, East Main Clinic & Stockton Diabetes Intervention Center.

Since 2007; nearly 750 black-owned barbershops have participated in the program. Participating barber locations for the Stockton area include: Dudes and Divas 345 N. California St. Stockton, CA 95202, Bay Kutz 936 N. Yosemite St. Stockton, CA 95203, Tru Barber Styles 338 E. Lafayette St. Stockton, CA 95203.

Our goal is to empower the African-American community to better understand various diseases, their complications as well as the standard of care they deserve as it relates to prevention and management.
