DoctorsHealthPress.com Reports on Study: Do Adults Really Need More Vitamin C

Boston, MA (PRWEB) July 28, 2012

The Doctors Health Press, a publisher of various natural health newsletters, books, and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, is reporting on a new study examining the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for vitamin C, asking the question of whether or not it is correct. Many scientists now argue that the RDA for vitamin C is less than half of what it should be. The problem is that medical experts evaluate this natural, critical nutrient in the same way they evaluate drugs, which leads to faulty conclusions.

As reported in Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/food-and-nutrition-articles/do-we-really-need-more-vitamin-c), there is compelling evidence that the RDA of vitamin C should be raised to 200 milligrams (mg) per day for adults. Currently, it stands at 75 mg daily for women and 90 mg for men. As the article reports, such optimum levels will saturate cells and tissues in a strong antioxidant, without posing any risk. (Vitamin C is water soluble and is easily shipping out of the body in urine when there is too much.)

The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article reports many adults in the U.S. and around the world are deficient in vitamin C. Plus, there is growing evidence that more of this vitamin could help prevent chronic disease. According to the article, testing vitamin C like a prescription drug won?t demonstrate how certain natural substances can prevent disease; in fact, some benefits of micronutrients in protecting against disease are apparent only after years or decades of study. The article suggests vitamin C could help reduce chronic diseases like heart disease, stroke, and cancer, and the underlying issues that lead to them?high blood pressure, inflammation, poor immune response, and clogged arteries.

A good diet with five to nine servings of fruits and raw or steam-cooked vegetables, together with a six-ounce glass of orange juice, could provide 200 mg of vitamin C, the article states. It also notes that as it stands, up to one-third of people are marginally deficient in vitamin C, and up to 20% in some populations are severely deficient?including smokers and older adults. Even marginal deficiency can lead to malaise, fatigue, and lethargy. Meanwhile, strong levels of vitamin C can enhance immune function, reduce inflammatory conditions such as atherosclerosis, and significantly lower blood pressure.

The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article also reports on three studies. A recent analysis of 29 studies concluded that 500 mg of vitamin C significantly reduced blood sugar. A second study of almost 20,000 men and women found that mortality from heart disease was 60% lower when comparing the blood vitamin C in the highest 20% of people to the lowest 20%. Elsewhere, a third study found that men with the lowest levels of vitamin C had a 62% higher risk of cancer death after 12 years.

Journey Healing Centers Reports 50+ Substance Abuse Treatment Surge in 2011

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) June 16, 2011

As more baby boomers retire, Journey Healing Centers (drug and alcohol treatment centers) is estimating a 140% increase in substance abuse treatment for the elderly in 2011 versus 2010. With retired workers replacing 15-hour office days with wine lunches, happy hours, dinners with friends, and possible increases in prescription medications, this trend is likely to continue and family education is essential. Lisa Lannon, Journey Healing Centers Co-Founder, shared, ?One of our elderly clients would sneak out of the retirement home, walk next door to the reception hall and crash weddings, and told us ?Who’s going to kick out Grandma??? According to a recent SAMHSA Study, substance abuse treatment admissions among those aged 50+ increased by 70% while the overall 50+ population only grew by 21% between 2000 and 2008. This study reports an estimated 1+ million emergency department (ED) visits by 50+ adults for adverse reactions to prescription drugs in 2008.

Based on seeing thousands of clients, Journey Healing Centers reports the top 3 trends in elderly substance abuse include: 1. Grief and Loss, 2. Financial Security and Retirement and 3. Extra Pressures on Elderly Women (often widowed first.) According to a federal survey, from 2005 to 2009, suicide attempts in which drugs played some role rose from 11,235 to 16,757 among women ages 50+.

Many elderly and baby boomers are on a limited budget, and will may have to make tough choices between paying for food, medicine and/or air conditioning/heat. Because many would rather suffer in silence versus ask for help since retirement is supposed to be one of the happiest times in life, it is especially important for loved ones to watch for clues and have interventions get involved before it?s too late. Based on addiction trends for the baby boomers and elderly and health risks, Journey Healing Centers is sharing 5 substance abuse prevention tips just-in-time for the summer heat when risks rise:

1. Talk to your parents about their medications, and offer to call the doctor about the combination of prescription pills. Prescription drug abuse is the second biggest addiction problem in the US, and it is important to ask questions about medications, especially when there is more than one prescription involved. Pain medication can easily be abused because there is a great perception if the pain didn?t go away with one pill, then two or more is ok. Talk to the doctor if pain tolerance to medication increases.

2. Set boundaries with loved ones to encourage a reduction in alcohol and drug abuse (prescription and/or illicit drugs) with goals for cutting back, accountability and possibly treatment.

3. If boundaries don?t work, have a caring intervention with a loved one. Explain that it is even more dangerous to drink or abuse drugs in the summer heat because it impairs judgment. It?s also dangerous to mix alcohol with many prescription drugs.

4. If a loved one is overweight, explain there is a greater health risk with substance abuse. If an eating disorder or food addiction is suspected, offer to get them help.

5. For anyone who cannot leave home or is confined to a bed, check in regularly to help them avoid depression that can lead to substance abuse.

The other challenge for baby boomers and elderly substance abuse treatment is that most long-term care providers are not equipped to handle alcohol and drug abuse as a primary diagnosis. Search for help early in your area for a treatment center with family support programs (provided by Journey Healing Centers) and avoid emergency care. According to a recent SAMHSA study, adults 50+ years comprise 51.1% of all emergency department visits each year related to adverse reactions to medications. Out of these visits, 61.5% were 65+ and 60.9% involved women. Nearly one third of these visits by older patients end up with hospital admissions for follow-up and treatment. While no one wants to think about a parent or grandparent as an alcoholic or drug addict, denial is dangerous and caring interventions can save lives.

LegalView Reports on Potential Link Between Children With TBI and the Development of ADHD

Denver, CO (PRWEB) November 13, 2008

LegalView, the most comprehensive legal resource available on the Internet, recently informed traumatic brain injury (TBI) blog readers of a link between children who have sustained a TBI with an increased risk of developing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). According to an article published in a recent edition of the British Medical Journal (BMJ), children who suffered from TBI had a 90 percent increased risk of developing ADHD before the ages of 10. Additionally, researchers believe that if TBI is not the cause of ADHD among TBI child victims, then an ADHD diagnosis is likely the cause of TBI due to “risk-taking characteristic” associated with ADHD.

TBI is one of the most common injuries in America and around the world. There are currently 5.4 million individuals living with TBI in the United States. Many of these victims go untreated for their TBI symptoms, which can often lead to a worsened condition. TBI victims are suggested to discuss their condition with a medical professional as well as an experienced personal injury law firm that can provide contact with a brain injury lawyer. It may be possible to develop a brain injury lawsuit, which could lead to the potential for receiving monetary compensation for damages incurred.

In addition to LegalView’s comprehensive traumatic brain injury information portal, LegalView also offers a plethora of additional information portals on topics ranging from mesothelioma cancer and the development of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) to providing information on controversial pharmaceuticals such as Ketek.

Mesothelioma cancer is considered a rare condition because it affects a portion of the population that has been exposed to asbestos fibers and dust, which causes the development of cancerous cells on the lining of the lung. However, this cancer is unique in that most individuals who have developed the condition are unaware of their cancer until symptoms appeared years and even decades later. Mesothelioma cancer remains dormant for years and is often dubbed a silent killer. Individuals who have developed mesothelioma may be able to seek legal counsel for their condition and should consider contacting an experienced mesothelioma attorney.

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) is also considered an uncommon condition and while its cause has yet to be determined, there has been a strong link between kidney patients receiving gadolinium dyes during magnetic resonance imaging/magnetic resonance angiogram (MRI/MRA) testing and the development of the condition. To learn more about this rare and extremely debilitating condition, which often causes the skin to thicken and swell to the point that joints cannot be bent, it is important for an NSF patient to not only seek medical counsel but to also locate an NSF lawyer as well. Often, medical bills are extremely expensive and developing a lawsuit may offer monetary reward as compensation for this preventable condition.

LegalView’s pharmaceutical information portals are also a wealth of information for patients who have suffered from severe and unintended side effects linked to a prescription drug. Ketek, for example, was manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis and released in April 2004. Only a couple of years following the drug’s release did patients of this upper respiratory antibiotic begin to report severe side effects found among patients with liver failure to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which issued an advisory on its Web site. Ketek has been allegedly linked to liver failure as well as several hospitalizations and deaths among patients. It is important for a patient of Ketek to discuss the antibiotic with their medical professional as well as contacting a pharmaceutical attorney for potential involvement in a potential Ketek class action lawsuit, which could reward Ketek victims with monetary compensation.

Abbott Reports $1.5 Billion of Litigation Reserves Related to Ongoing Settlements for Depakote: AttorneyOne.com Provides Advice and Solutions for the Alleged Birth Defects from Depakote

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) February 09, 2012

The media spotlight is often a double-edged sword. No one knows this better than the families of children with birth defects. And yet, gossip and rumor-mongering aside, the real story here is being overlooked according to Sean Burke of AttorneyOne.

According to the lawsuits filed in Dec. 2010 and Jan. 2011, more than two dozen parents sued Abbott Laboratories (St. Clair County Circuit Court Case No.10-L-651, 11-L-27 & 11-L-143) claiming that Depakote caused birth defects in their children ranging from spina bifida to heart conditions. This class action suit was the third class action filed in Illinois against Abbott Laboratories. These cases involve claims regarding pregnant mothers who used Depakote while pregnant.

On June 2010, the New England Journal of Medicine published a study mentioning that the risk of spina bifida from Depakote may be 12 times higher with use of the medication during pregnancy.

AttorneyOne.com, a recognized authority on law, can provide helpful advice and simple solutions including how to get in contact with legal council so that, in case of Depakote adverse effects, someone can easily and inexpensively deal with it. As Mr. Burke, director of Media Relations for AttorneyOne.com, added, ?What all this information really illustrates is that threat of severe adverse effects from Depakote remains. For that reason, our focus should squarely fall on getting the word out and assisting people in finding the right legal assistance.?

In October 2006, the FDA issued a “Black Box” warning on Depakote prescription, warning of instances of severe side side effects including teratogenicity, pancreatitis and hepatoxicity.

In late 2009, the FDA required Abbott Laboratories to update the warning label on Depakote to ensure that women of child-bearing age are aware of the risk of major birth defects.

AttorneyOne.com has further information on Depakote lawsuits including how to get in contact with legal council.

Study Reveals Top Non-genetic Risk Factors for Alzheimer?s and Parkinson?s, Reports DoctorsHealthPress.com

Boston, MA (PRWEB) July 10, 2012

The Doctors Health Press, a publisher of various natural health newsletters, books, and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, reports on an on-going study on the top risk factors of Alzheimer?s.

As reported in Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/brain-function-articles/the-top-risk-factors-for-alzheimers-revealed), over the past decade, medical professionals and scientists have been searching for any clues that show links between disease and environmental toxins. While some diseases are definitely caused by genetic factors, many others have simply baffled doctors. Alzheimer?s disease and Parkinson?s disease fall into this category. A lot has been learned about what happens when someone gets either of these medical conditions, but not a lot is known about what triggers them and causes them to take hold in the body in the first place.

The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article reports scientists generally agree that there is unlikely a single clear cause of Alzheimer?s. For this reason, many suggest Alzheimer?s is the result of a combination of inter-related factors, including genetic factors and environmental influences that could include anything from previous head trauma to educational level, to experiences early in life. A new growing body of research is also helping to identify various ?lifestyle factors,? such as dietary habits, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and exposure to environmental toxins.

As for Parkinson?s, scientists know that the brain cells that control movement rely on a chemical called ?dopamine.? Dopamine is manufactured in an area of the brain called the substantia nigra. In Parkinson?s, dopamine-producing cells in the substantia nigra are lost. In most cases, no one knows why. Some genetic mutations have been discovered, suggesting that Parkinson?s may run in some families; however, new clinical trials are suggesting that environment plays a larger role than inheritance. In fact, the general medical consensus is that genetic factors are dominant only in Parkinson?s that appears before age 50.

So what?s really happening to usher in these two diseases? For some answers, consider the results from a recent clinical trial performed by Spanish researchers. These scientists decided to conduct a review to find which risk factors were most prominent when it came to Alzheimer?s or Parkinson?s. Here are the results, as the Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article, ?The Top Risk Factors for Alzheimer?s Revealed,? reports:

????Evidence consistently suggests that a higher risk of Parkinson?s is associated with pesticides.
????A higher risk of Alzheimer?s is associated with pesticides, hypertension, high cholesterol levels in middle age, and high levels of homocysteine, smoking, traumatic brain injury, and depression.
????There is some evidence suggesting that higher risk of Parkinson?s is associated with high milk consumption in men, high iron intake, chronic anemia, and traumatic brain injury.
????There is also some evidence suggesting a higher risk of Alzheimer?s is associated with high aluminum intake through drinking water, excessive exposure to electromagnetic fields from electrical grids, obesity in middle age, excessive alcohol consumption, and chronic anemia.

Omega XL Reports New Independent Study: Omega-3s Have Beneficial Effect on Anxiety

Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) July 10, 2012

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as found in Omega XL?, have long been considered positive additives to the diet because they protect against chronic inflammatory conditions. Now, a new study suggests that another benefit to omega-3s could be linked to reducing anxiety.

According to a recent investigation, published in the journal Brain, Behavior and Immunity and backed by the Ohio State University Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS), researchers, who have spent more than 30 years researching connections between immunity and psychological stress, noted a reduction in both anxiety and inflammation among a group of young healthy individuals given an omega-3 supplement.

The link between food and mood has been well established; specifically cognition, depression and anxiety are all connected to what we eat. The brain is made up of 60 percent fat, the majority of it omega-3s. Obviously fatty acid intake is important to its health; however the typical American diet is low in omega-3s.

Omega-3s, particularly DHA, help promote nerve cell growth in the hippocampus. The hippocampus is responsible for memory and mood, which can play a role in anxiety. In the Ohio State study, medical students took omega-3 supplements (2.5 grams per day) and were tested by psychological surveys, then compared to a placebo group. Those taking omega-3 supplements experienced a 20 percent reduction in anxiety compared to the group that did not.

The reduction in anxiety symptoms associated with omega-3 supplementation provides the first evidence that omega-3s may have potential anti-anxiety benefits for individuals without an anxiety disorder diagnosis.

Omega XL is one of only two Omega 3 supplements sold in the world that contains the patented stabilized marine lipid extract PCSO-524? derived only from the New Zealand green-lipped mussel, with 30 healthy fatty acids including DHA and EPA. Sold in other parts of the world under its sister brand name Lyprinol, Omega XL is manufactured exclusively by Great HealthWorks Inc., and is the most widely available omega-3 fish oil supplement containing the potent PCSO-524? marine lipid extract. Another Canadian Study Finds an Increased Risk of Bladder Cancer for Those Using Diabetes Drug Actos, the Consumer Justice Foundation Reports

(PRWEB) July 10, 2012

The Consumer Justice Foundation, a for-profit corporation whose team of professional consumer advocates provides free online informational resources regarding the potential risks and dangers associated with the use of certain prescription medications, hereby alerts the public of the publication of another study that concludes that using the diabetes drug Actos raises the possibility that patients will develop bladder cancer.

Specifically, this most recent Actos bladder cancer study was published in the July 3 edition of the Canadian Medical Association Journal, and it was headed by Dr. Jeffrey A. Johnson at the Canada Research Chair in Diabetes Health Outcomes at the University Of Alberta School Of Public Health. The study involved researchers analyzing data from 2.6 million people with type 2 diabetes who were prescribed medications from the class known as thiazolidinediones, which includes Actos. The study concluded that 3,643 people within this group were diagnosed with bladder cancer that resulted in an increased risk of Actos users developing bladder cancer by a factor of 22 percent.

This study comes on the heels of another Actos bladder cancer study that was published in the 31 May 2012 Issue of the British Medical Journal. That study was conducted by researchers at McGill University and was entitled, ?The use of pioglitazone and the risk of bladder cancer in people with type 2 diabetes: nested case-control study.? That study examined the medical records of more than 115,000 patients who used Actos to treat their diabetes between the years of 1988 and 2009, and it concluded that people who used Actos faced the prospect of developing the Actos side effect of bladder cancer by a factor of 1.99 to 1 when they used the medication for a duration of more than 24 months.

Dr. Johnson, who led the most recent study conducted by Canadian researchers that found an increased risk of bladder cancer in Actos users by a factor of 22 percent stated that he ?suspects the link between Actos and bladder cancer would have to be the result of a direct effect of the medication.? Anyone who is using Actos is encouraged to discuss the situation with their doctors.

About the Consumer Justice Foundation????

The Consumer Justice Foundation, whose Web site can be found at http://www.consumerjusticefoundation.com, is a for-profit organization that serves two purposes for consumers: (1) to provide educational information regarding the policies and procedures of large corporations and how they affect the average consumer; and (2) to provide news updates and resources that continue to update consumers regarding developments taken by corporations that include pharmaceutical drug companies, auto manufacturers and insurance companies so that consumers who have been harmed can use these informational resources to connect to an experienced professional who can help them. Tanning Beds as Harmful as Tanning in the Sun, Reports Harvard Women’s Health Watch

Boston, MA (Vocus) September 3, 2009

Whether it comes from the sun or from artificial sources such as sun lamps and tanning beds, ultraviolet radiation is linked to skin cancers and to other sorts of skin damage, particularly premature skin aging, reports the September 2009 issue of Harvard Women’s Health Watch.

Ultraviolet radiation is one part of the spectrum of light that reaches the earth from the sun. The longer ultraviolet rays (UVA), which penetrate deep into the skin, are responsible for tanning. Shorter rays (UVB) damage superficial skin cell layers, causing sunburn. Tanning beds use fluorescent bulbs that emit mostly UVA, with smaller doses of UVB. The amount of UVA radiation emitted in a tanning bed is up to three times more intense than the UVA in natural sunlight, and the UVB intensity in tanning beds approaches that of bright sunlight.

There’s mounting evidence of a link between tanning bed use and all skin cancers. In 2002, a study found that use of an indoor tanning device was associated with a 50% increase in the risk of basal cell carcinoma and a more than 100% increase in the risk of squamous cell carcinoma. In 2007, an international cancer research organization found that people who started indoor tanning before age 35 had a 75% greater risk of developing melanoma, a serious and sometimes life-threatening cancer.

Harvard Women’s Health Watch notes that despite the clear evidence that it’s unsafe, the use of tanning beds is on the rise. The tanning industry claims that tanning is a good way to stimulate the skin’s production of vitamin D, which is essential to bone health and has also been linked to a reduced risk for some cancers. But supplements can easily provide sufficient vitamin D, without any risks to skin health.

Bernstein Liebhard LLP Reports On New Study Concerning Actos Side Effects

New York, New York (PRWEB) June 14, 2012

Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a New York law firm nationally recognized for its consumer protection and mass tort practices, reports on a June 11, 2012 study that found that diabetes medications such as Actos may cause a serious eye problem called diabetic macular edema.* The study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, found that patients who took Actos or other thiazolidinedione drugs had a two to three fold increased risk of developing diabetic macular edema, a condition that can lead to blindness. Researchers collected data on more than 100,000 people with type 2 diabetes from the British Health Improvement Network database. After one year, 1.3 percent of patients taking thiazolidinedione developed the eye problem, compared to 0.2 percent of patients who did not take the drugs. Macular edema is a swelling of the part of the eye responsible for sharp vision when looking straight ahead. The swelling occurs when fluid leaks into the center of the macula and blurs vision.

Lead researcher Dr. Iskandar Idris, an associate professor in diabetes medicine at the University of Nottingham, told HealthDay: ?More aggressive management of risk factors for macular edema should be implemented in patients who take thiazolidinedione. In addition, routine screening for visual acuity should be performed during routine diabetes review, especially for patients who take thiazolidinediones.?** Drugs in this category include Avandia and Actos.

Other Actos Side Effects Include Bladder Cancer

This latest study adds to prior concerns about other Actos side effects, such as an increased risk of developing bladder cancer. A May 31, 2012 study published in the British Medical Journal found that patients who took Actos had an 83 percent increased rate of developing bladder cancer, which increased to 88 percent for those who took Actos for two years or longer?or those who consumed 28,000 milligrams or more.*** In May 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (?FDA?) published a study, which concluded that there is a link between Actos and bladder cancer; the FDA added a warning label to alert users about Actos side effects.**** While Actos is still available in the United States, it has been recalled in both Germany and France.

The lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are evaluating potential lawsuits against the drug manufacturer, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, on behalf of individuals who experienced Actos side effects such as bladder cancer and diabetic macular edema. Those who experienced Actos side effects may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and other injuries.
