Web-Based Education Helps People with Schizophrenia and Their Families

Boulder, CO (PRWEB) October 27, 2011

Armando Rotondi of the University of Pittsburg, author of the study, developed the Website to deliver information about schizophrenia directly to the homes of people with schizophrenia. He then compared users of the site with a control group. Results show that sufferers using the site had a large reduction in symptoms and significant increase in knowledge of the disease. Friends and families also significantly increased their knowledge about the course and outcome of the illness.

?These findings suggest that online delivery of psychotherapeutic treatment and educational resources to consumers? homes has considerable potential and offers advantages over standard clinic-based services,? Rotondi comments.

Dr. Richard Warner, director of Colorado Recovery in Boulder, is currently adapting the Web content to serve a broader spectrum of clients with major mental illnesses beyond schizophrenia. The interactive Web-based program will include Colorado Recovery patients, their families, and therapists.

?I was immediately struck by the value of this program,? Dr. Warner comments, ?especially since most of our clients come from families spread across the nation. This gives us a way for families and clients to communicate with one another about the illnesses and their effects.?

The paper ?Effectiveness of Web-based Family Psychoeducational Therapy Delivered to the Homes of Persons with Schizophrenia and Their Family Members,? will be presented at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, October 28, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in San Francisco as part of the symposium ?Innovations in Psychiatric Rehabilitation.?

Colorado Recovery treats adults with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or other serious mental illness, at a community-based residence in Boulder, and with intensive outpatient programs and rehabilitation services.

Learning about Paranoid Schizophrenia through Blockbuster Movies

In the movie,” A Beautiful Mind”, Russel Crowe portrays a brilliant mathematician John Nash whose work is challenged by his bouts of paranoid schizophrenia which he constantly battled with throughout his life. Despite this ailment, John Nash was able to win the Noble Prize. This battle between John Nash and his ailment was the real story of the movie and it won the Best Picture Category in the 2002 Academy Awards.

Paranoid Schizophrenia is just one of the forms of schizophrenia diagnosed. This type of ailment is also one of the most common as people living with it have a distrust for anything and everyone and feel that someone or something is out to get them. This brain disorder is one that challenges not only the patient but those loved ones. Affecting the perception of the patient, it affects the very patient’s social interaction, thought processes, logic and perception of the real world. In short a person with schizophrenia acts and talks in his or her own world where it seems everything is illogical but him or her.

There is a classic television series called the Twilight Zone which was created by Rod Serling. In one episode, a man suddenly wakes up to find that his means of words have now different meanings in the time he is living in. What dog meant before now means tree. This proved to be understandably confusing to the protagonist and he had no option but to adapt and re-learn the meanings to the words. People with schizophrenia often do not have that option if the sickness is left untreated. Prior to the last century, those with paranoid schizophrenia were sent to mental institutions and left there. These days there are medicines which can act as inhibitors to the chemical imbalances that may trigger schizophrenia, most of which are inhibitors to cortisol, glutamate, and dopamine. Counseling is also a system of treatment used for people living with schizophrenia and these sessions do monitor the stages and incidents of any episodes as such.

Paranoid schizophrenia, if left untreated, could have detrimental effects to the patient. It may lead to suicide tendencies or worse yet, may cause them to act violently and such actions may result in unprovoked and senseless homicides. Though this is rare in most cases, some defense lawyers use paranoid schizophrenia as a defense for those charged with murder and homicide. Knowing the early signs of paranoid schizophrenia such as social withdrawal and hostility or suspiciousness are key factors for appropriate diagnosis and treatment. This ailment may not be cured but can be treated and contained.

History, Origination and Definition of Schizophrenia

The word Schizophrenia whose origination lies in the Greek roots: schizo (split) and phrene (mind), is used to describe a kind of mental disorder in which a person goes through nebulous thoughts and lose track of reality.

Schizophrenia in 2000B.C.

The history of Schizophrenia ages back to around 2000 B.C., when little was known about mental disorders. The only way to cure mental disorder was to drive the evil spirit out of the body as people believed that the evil spirit is the cause of this. There were many ways of exorcism, in some cases patients were made to listen to strange music, believing that this would drive out the evil spirit, while in other cases holes were drilled into the skull of the patient, providing spirits a way to escape from the patient’s brain.

Schizophrenia as understood by the Egyptians

A mention of mental disorders and their symptoms is there in The Book of Heart, an Egyptian book. The Egyptians conceived that heart and brain are linked to each other. Hence, according to them if a person is suffering from some kind of mental disorder, it was a validation of the fact that he has certain heart ailments. All the people suffering from Schizophrenia were considered mad and dangerous, in spite of the display of their normal human characteristics at all other times. The only refuges for them were the mental homes. Such brutality and misconception existed till science evolved and scientists, researchers and clinicians came up with a logical and apt explanation for the condition.

]]>

Evolution in the understanding of Schizophrenia

Initial efforts to understand and record atypical mental behaviors were made in the seventeenth century. Later in 1887, Emile Kraepelin, who was a German psychiatrist, classified different kinds of mental disorders and defined them by one term: dementia praecox. In the nineteenth century the awareness of people towards diseases and their causes increased tremendously. This century saw an explosion of discoveries in the field of medical science. In 1908, a Swiss psychiatrist named Eugen Bleuler gave these mental disorders a name of Schizophrenia. The definition and symptoms of Schizophrenia that we are using today was put up by another German psychiatrist,Kurt Schneider, in 1957.

Regardless of the progression in medical science, there were few people who were unable to accept the logic and explanation of science and for their benefit continued to commit cruelty towards human race, one such example is the case of World War II. During the World War II Schizophrenia was identified to be a genetic disorder and in order to prevent transmission of the condition from one generation to another and practice selective procreation, mentally disturbed people were killed.

Despite of such pathetic examples in the history of Schizophrenia, psychiatrists, doctors and scientists have never given up hope and have worked day and night for advancement in the understanding of Schizophrenia. Many misconceptions about Schizophrenia have become clear. Slowly, the general public is able to sympathize and understand the challenges of people with Schizophrenia, therefore reducing the need for brutal treatments and asylum lodging. To help treat and relieve their mental disorder, you need to spend time, show care and affection with proper medication.

Overcoming Common Psychologies – Schizophrenia

The human brain is perhaps the most complex and rigid form to explore and understand. Since the evolution of science along with humankind there has been significant promotion in the fields of numerous psychological issues.

But despite of all the psychological and scientific advancements been made, the complexions relating different human emotions and thoughts are still under research. As such till date, what we have gained, it is now very much possible to tackle several complex psychologies.

It has been well depicted that unless a condition is self explored it is not clearly explained. Schizophrenia is much alike other common psychologies which today is suffered by many. To be quite clear it can be said that Schizophrenia works its way through the fears and ignorance of an individual. Another major symptom of it is ears that make other voices loud enough to be heard clearly and ultimately gets disrupted in the form of other unpleasant voices which you would have ignored under normal conditions.

Hence we can say that fears, ignorance and sounds that we hear play a major role in making an individual suffer from Schizophrenia.

]]>

Under most common conditions, it is said that Schizophrenia attacks when an individual does not receives the care or attention from where it had been getting the same or is left alone with no solution for overcoming his fears. Also, too much of thinking can result in sleepless nights and this can ultimately result in both mental and physical tiredness.

The most common symptom of Schizophrenia is that an individual starts questioning about his/her fears or ignorance and starts responding to unusual voices. Under such conditions the individual begins to ignore his/her actual surrounding and completely gets engaged in his/her imaginary world. Loss of attentiveness to its current surrounding is another major symptom of Schizophrenia.

The most appropriate solution for a person suffering from Schizophrenia is the support from his/her family, friends and colleagues. Let the affected person realize their current environment in which they are and make them talk about their problems or fears in a relaxed manner.

It is true that Schizophrenia directly relates to sleeping disorders but this dosen’t means that sleeping pills are the only available solution. Yes, sleeping pills can prove beneficial in some cases but it is always better to take medecines upon recommendations of a psychiatrist. There are other medecations also that play a crucial role in treating Schizophrenia. Hence, it is highely recommended to consult a phychiatrist before taking any medecation for treating schizophrenia.

As sleeping pills are involved in the treatment of Schizophrenia, hence there are also certain side effects associated with it. It is recommended to consult your doctor well before taking the pills. Also, it is very important to change the place of living of the patient. For this, it would be better for them to go on a vacation or trip that would just fresh their minds.

At last it can be clearly said that a person being treated for Schizophrenia can be best treated through basic psychological measures and along with the behavioral therapy.
